NOTES AND COMMENTS

[BY CrtEIICOB.I Weights for tho first day's handicaps at Trentham appear in this issue. Owners and trainers should bear in mind that acceptances close 011 Friday next. With the exception of tho AVhanjarei Meeting,' which takes place on Wednesday and Thursday next, there will lie a cessation of racing uutil the Wellington Cup Meeting, which opens on" Jannary 20. According to Secretary A. E. Whyte, of . the Wellington Racing Club, there is every probability of a record number of horses taking part in tho Cup Meeting this week. Applications for boxes and accommodation are coming in from all parts. At Trentham this month Desert Gold is engaged in the Wellington Stakes, five furlongs, for 2 and 3-year-olds, and also in tho Kelburn Plato, four furlongs, weight-for-age, but according to the northern writer "Whalebone," she may not be raced here. Tho Riccarton trainer P. Holmes has grown tired of Ardenvohr, and at the conclusion of the Dunedin fixture the 3-year-old Martian colt was handed to C. Geislev to train. Gold Painting, who got amongst the' winners at Auckland, is a sistor to Moulu. They are both by Bonil'orm from tho imported Onne mare Ormolu, and it is interesting to note that tho latter ' has thrown four foals to Boniform, and they have alternately appeared as bay and chestnut. An interesting point in connection with Desert Gold is the fact that the filly has never yet been asked in her training to gallop on anything but a grass track. A Dunedin writer says: "Peronilla looks a. much-improved mare, and, minus her two and. a hall' mile bolt, must liavo been dangerous in the North _ Otago Cup." ■ Sarah Grand, the winner of the two-year-old race 011 tho first day of the Hav/ke'd Hay meeting, was got .by All 131ack from Heavenly Twin, the dam of Theodore and Diavolo. Tlio English horse Panmure, purchased by G. Price in England, has already won two races, though he has not been in tho Dominion six months, lie is freely spoken of in connection with tho Telegraph Handicap at Trentham, in which 110 has 7st. 121b.. So' far Desert Gold has won just nndci' .£IO,OOO in stakes. • - Tlio Croesus suspension ease, which caused such a stir in tho ilawkeVs Bay distr/ct, was to have been reopened Inst evening by the Hawko's Bay Jockey Club. Despite a t'alling-oIV of XIOO in the gate receipts and a shrinkage of 2:1500 in tho lotalisatoi- returns, tho Southland Racing Club made a profit of JMOO over its Now Year Meeting. Discussing the weights for tho Telegraph Handicap a trainer remarked yesterday that it was not a strong field. This may be so, but it is as good as can Ik 1 got at the present time. The only noticeable defections are I lie Aucklaiidnrs, Morry'Ttoo and King Lupin, and ';robiiblv Hie.v are tmimr ri\-en'Pil lor tlie TaUtttniu iUiwtluif, ivkloh. i'vUvw.-) 'ivuiif
