Tlie Hon. James Allen returns from Auckland this afternoon. The Right Hon. Sir Joseph Ward is expected back from his visit to the south to-morrow morning. Colonel Logan, Administrator of the occupied territory of German Samoa was ill Wellington yesterday, leaving for the south last evening. Last night the Messengers' Association tendered Captain Hennah, who has I for some time ■ been Chief Inspector of Messengers, a farewell. Captain Hennah is retiring on' superannuation. Mr. J. Hislop, Under-Secretary for Internal Affaire, presided/ and the Hon. G. W. Russell, Minister for Internal Affairs, was among those present. The evening was very pleasantly spent, and all the speakers eulogised the guest of the evening. Messrs. Russell and Hislop, particularly, spoke in high praise of his work. Information lias l>een received from England intimating that Mr; Edward Macmilian, a nephew of Mr. W. Macmilian, of Palmerston North, was promoted to the rank of captain in the Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders, after the battle of . Loos, where he was badly wounded in the knee. Remuera for England, wjiere he will take up a commission in the motor transport service, and afterwards leave for active service at the front. Dr. W. A. Bowie, son of Mr. B. 'H. Bowie, Timaru, who has been in practice in Sjydney for the past two years, is returning to New Zealand. Dr. W. J. Porteous, of Dunedin,.and Mrs. and the Misses Porteous are passengers. by the Remuera, -which leaves Wellington for London to-day. , The Rev. R. Sprott, of Auckland, is a passenger to London by the Remuera. Mr. G. S. V. Wenley, of Napier, is proceeding Home by the Remuera, which leaves Wellington to-day. He is accompanied by Mi-Si, and Miss Wenley. Mr. E: F. Mitchell, K.C., and Mrs. Mitchell leave Wellington for London by the Remuera ; to-day. Mr. K. L. Caldwell, of Auckland, is a passenger for London by the Remuera. Dr. A. M'Gregor Grant, acting-medi-cal superintendent of the Auckland District"" Hospital, who has received a commission as a captain in the New Zealand Medical Corps, will probably Vacate his position at the hospital -on January 14 (says the "Herald ). Ho was appointed acting-medical superintendent in place of Major C. E. Ma•guire, who is on the staff of No. 1 Now Zealand Stationary Hospital, twelvo months ago. He volunteered conditionally in September last, offering his services at the conclusion of tho twelvo months' service for which he had contracted with the Hospital Board. Dr. Grant has at varioiiß times occupied the whole of the positions on the medical staff of the hospital during the live years 'he has been employed by tho board. Dr. A. N. M'Kelvey, who is at present superintendent tho Costley Home, has been temporarily appointed acting-medical superintendent of the hospital. Tho death took place at Dovleston on Thursday last of a very old and liiglilyrespecteil resident of the district, in tho person of Mr. Charles Plant. The deceased was born at Clapbam, London, sixty-six years ago, and came out' to New Zealand in the sailing ship, Hereford in 1876. He first settled at Tai 'J'apu, where ho was employed for two years by the late Mr. James Osborne. Ho then went to South Canterbury and assisted for a time .with the construction of the railway to Fairlio, returning later to Doyleston. TJp to the time of his death he was a director of the Ellesmere Engineering Works. • Visitors staying at the Albert Hotel are Miss M. Greenslado and Miss M. Burke, of Dunedin, Mr. and Mrs. G. D.
