"BALLED"
COUNT BERNSTORFF'S EXPERIENCE. _ Count Bernstorff, Gorman Ambassador at Washington, was recently "balled" by the Long Island Country Club,. where tho "big men" of New York enjoy themselves, more particularly at the week-ends, Mr. 0. C. Beale, who lately returned from a tour of the war centres and Amerioa, recently related how it was done. Tho German Ambassador had a house built for him close to tho home of Mr. Bealo's nephew, both of them being near the Long Island Country Club. Count Bernfitorff gave his name in to be put up/ for membership. Mr. Beale'* nephew,' as governor of the club, called, the committee together, and told them that, they must choose as between .the German Ambassador and their club governor, for both could not be members of the club. The committee argued tho matter, and the matter was postponed. In the meantime, the Lnsitania was Bunk, and, concluded Mr. Beale, "down came the Ambassador's name."
