THE 9TH TO MARCH RIFLE BATTALIONS TO VISIT AUCKLAND ; . VARIOUS MILITARY MATTERS i . . ' The Ninth Reinforcements are to ', march through Wellington on Saturday 1 afternoon-. Respecting this march, the City Cadets have been ordered to parade at 1.30 p.m. for the purpose of assisting in the regulation of street traffic. Rifle Battalions go to Auckland. It' has been understood in Wellington for some' time that the Third and Fourth 1 Battalions of the.'Riflo Brigade ivoiild visit Auckland before sailing for the front. . The Minister of Defence, who, has been in' Auckland, is reported to have confirmed this impression. The "Herald" attributes the following statement .to the Minister:— With a view to encouraging recruiting, arrangements are being made to bring the third and fourth battalions of tile New Zealand Rifle Brigade to Auckland before they, are dispatched to the front-. _ The training of this body of troops is now approaching completion, and by the end of this month it will be able to demonstrate the degree of efficiency that is attained by the system of training in . the Dominion. With the exception of small contingents that have been trained in the district, the people of Auckland have not had an opportunity to witness a parade of such a force of men. If- arrangements can be made the two battalions will visit the city about a month hence. The No. 2 Field Ambulance, which has been in training at Awapuni, Palmerston North, will probably visit Auckland at the same time. 375 Men short. As regards the campaign for men, it is stated that the Eleventh Reinforcements are still 375 men short. The Auckland ofßco reports that it has been advised to that effect.
Tauherenikau Camp. Captain N. Newcomb, M.S.C., has arrived in camp at Tauherenikau, and has taken up tho duties of Camp Adjutant' _ Lieutenant J. W. Silcock (6th nauraki Regiment) has been appointed Assistant Camp Adjutant. The following officers have been temporarily posted to the units mentioned: -Lieut. A. P Bell, A Sqdn., 9th, to B bqdn., 11th; Lieut. F. M. Preston. D bqdn., 9th, to Ist. Res., 10th, Corpl. J. Given has been temporarily appointed a lance-sergeant.

Rifle Clubs' Allowance. The ammunition allowance to .rifla clubs for the year 1915-16 has been increased from 50 to 100 rounds per man. Qualified for Commissions. Wellington Men for Gamp. Five more men from tlie City were sent ,to Trentham yesterday. They wore:—M. Christopher, J. Thomson, j. Carlyle, E. H. Hartley, and A. E. Byrne. Temporary Rejection of Recruits. Wellington District Headquarters announces :— "With reference to the examination of recruits for the Expeditionary Force, it has been ruled that when a man lias been passed by a local medical officer and subsequently rejected at Trentham, he sliould uot be put to the expense of a small operation if that will render him efficient. In such, cases the Defence Department will accept the responsibility .of having the man put right. "It appears that cases are occurring in which men who have been discharged for minor reasons from the Expeditionary Forces and Reinforcements have been informed, upon applying for reenlistment, that they cannot be accepted.' "Where men are now fit and qualified, and have not been discharged for misconduct,'.but for a minor reason which has since been removed, arrangements will'be mado for their re-enlistment and for them to receive proforence in being sent into camp." Mascot for the Maheno. . Colonel Elliott, who will bo in charge of the medical staff of tbe hospital ship Maheno on her next mission of mercy, states that Mrs. A. E, Kernot
sented the ship ivith a mascot in the lorm of a very line Russian wolfhound. Soldiers on Sick Leave. Wellington District Headquarters state: "Soldiers',while on sick-leave or ordinary leave must wear their uniform until discharged or returned to duty." Another Last Chance. Wellington City Group has been advised that January 8 is the last day on which men will be accopted for the tli Reinforcements, who wont into canip last year very' short. This is the third "last" dato announced. The others . were December 23. and December 31. Appointment and Transfer. Lieutenant (temporary) J. E. Packman, attached (temporarily) Now Zealand Army Service Corps," is to be Assistant Director of. Supplies and Transport, Wellington District. 2nd Lieutenant Iveith Logan Caldwell, from the Wanganui College Senior Cadots, is transferred to the I'etone Technical School Senior Cadets (No. 29 Company). There is quite a lot of talk about people exploiting the soldiers, but thero is at least one Wellington business man who_ has gone out of his wav to offer conctiisitns to "our boys." Mr. A. E. M. Rowland, jeweller, 90 Manners Street, offers 15 per cent, special discount off all soldiers' requisites, such as wristlet watches, binoculars, etc.—Advt.
