FIGHTING CONTINUES WITH TREMENDOUS ENERGY.
Petrograd, January 4. Official.—The enemy attacked near Chartorysk', also on the Upper Strypa, but was repulsed with heavy losses. Fighting north-east of Czernowitz continues with tremendous energy. , The Russian advance continues. The enemy losses are enormous. Sixteen officers and 766 unwounded men were captured. It is becoming clearer that the Russians have taken the initiative on the southern frontier. It is reported that the enemy has evacuated Czernowitz. Manv Germans have been' made prisoners. _ A Russian communique says: lne Russians on the Middle Strypa have occupied the enemy trenches, also a line of trenches north-east of Czernowitz.
