A German official message states: "On tlie Eastern front tliere have been minor engagements, in which the Russians were unsuccessful." VIOLENT FIGHTING RUSSIANS CONTINUE TO ADVANCE. (Rec. January 4, 11.50 p.m.) Petrograd, January 4. A .Russian communique says: "The enemy, while attempting to approach our trenches in the Czartorysk region and in tils Upper Strypa, were repulsed with heavy loss. "The fighting north-eastward of Czerr.ovitz is unabatedly violent. The Russians, despite numerous counter-at-tacks, are uninterruptedly advancing. The enemy's losses are very heavy."
