PROGRESS OF PETONE
STATEMENT BY THE MAYOR. The Mayor of l'etono' (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan) stated yesterday that notwithstanding the war there were marked evidences of progress ill the borough. Buildings to tho value of £28,750 had been erected or wore in course of erection, including an uj>-to-date picture theatre. There was still a big demand for dwelling-houses, and as private enterprise was unable to meet the requirements of the people, it was possible that tho Borough Council might consider it necessary to use the powers vested in it by the Municipal Corporations Act of 1913, and start a building scheme. The sewerage project had been advanced to the point where more than half of the borough properties may bo connected, and it was hoped to complete the scheme by the end of 1916, ajid within the amount raised for tho purpose. • At the gasworks, a . new gasholder is shortly to bo erected, the cost (about £40U0) to be met out of revenue. The provision of additional Tetorts during the year will increase tho gas producing capacity to 75,000,000 ft. annually, and a considerable reduction in the cost to consumers should be possible at tho end of tlie next financial year. There was no possibility of a shortage in oho water suppl? for many years to come. Many improvements had been effected in the recreation grounds, on the foresTiore, and "there is every reason for confidence in tho futuro of the town," concluded Mi - . M'Ewan. 1
