* * i WAIAARAPA MEETING . I TARINGAMUTU WINS AGAIN, (From Our Special Correspondent.) Carterton, January 3. Tlio Wairarapa Meeting was concluded to-day in glorious weather. The totalisator Handled ' ,£18,910, as against XU,lBi last year. Botanist was scratched for the Russell Handicap, leaving lour runners. Sea Lord, Lady Black, and Otter were evenly supported, but Need was neglected on the machine. At the start Otter shot out and led to the turn, where Lady Black collared him. Need moved up in the straight, and in a very close finish got up in the last stride, Sea Lord was a length, away, and Otter, whose gear broke, was last. Eight runners contested the Tawha Hack Handicap, the withdrawals being Marsinah and Braemare. Jean Laddo and Nenno were the quickest to find their feet and led into the straight, where the former came away • and after resisting a challenge by Probation sho won by a length. Arlington was two lengths away, and then canio Neuno, Ally, and Mollyhawk. All the acceptors started in the Tauherenikau Handicap, which was voted open judging by the even support accorded the runners. Taringamutu again took up the pacing, and though challenged' by Want and Red Book at different times she held them o(f and won by a length from Want. Orleans was close up bhird, and then came Montana, Red Book, and Immer. The shorter distance to-day suited the winner, who' carries weight well. Injiner did not get the best of runs, and Sir Alba was disappointing. Marsinah won the Hack Welter Handicap, with her head in her chest. She was a liot order, and jumping out well from the barrier was not extended on the journey. Rongora and Rumania occupied the minor places throughout the journey. Before the races commenced today, an inquiry. was held into the mare's reversal of form' on the opening day, but after hearing the owner tlie stewards took no action. The three-year-olds Happiness and Pall Mall were withdrawn from the Juvenile Handicap, and the public made the first day's winner, Rose Pink, a hot favourite, ivhilo Ostend also came in for a lot of support. Elation (Elevation—lntelligence) jumped out very smartly, and though , challenged strongly by Struggle and Rose : Pink he lasted long enough to win by a length. Struggle was a length away in third place. Mascot and Lady General were prominent "amongst the others. Heel Tap was the best backed of the runners in the Ruamahanga Hack Handicap, but he was rather easily defeated by Manu, whom T. Pritohard managed to keep froni hanging out. The favourite was second and Miraculous third. The last-named will be better for tho race. Need, who was penalised for. her win earlier in the day, Was fourth.. Hymettius, Happiness, and King of Athol were evenly backed in the Rawiri Handicap, five furlongs. Tho first-named got away with his rider in a false start, and completed the course' before being checked. It was then found that some of his gear Hail broken, and a further delay took place. In the race' he was last away, but soon hit the front, and led into the straight. The effort then told, and he was beaten into third place by Arrab.na and Sea Lord. A big field of maidens went to. the post in the Hack Scurry. The public went heavily for Glorify and Merrie Poto. and they finished first and second, though not in tho order indicated on the machine. The favourite was unlucky enough to get a bad bump just after the start, but he recovered himself well, and going on beat all But Merrie Poto, who jumped out smartly and was prominent the whole way. Try Again just beat .Privation for third place. THE RESULTS. RUSSELL HANDICAP. Six furiongg Need, 7st j Lady Black, Bst. 111b. .......: 2 Sea Lord, 9st! 3 Also started: Otter, 7st. Won by a head.
