Pride of place, so far-as purely military events are concerned, belongs to the great offensive opened by the Russians on their southern front. It has already achieved material success and promises to develop even greater proportions. Fairly full accounts now available of the sinking of the Persia demonstrate that the ship was torpedoed without warning, no account being taken of the fact that she was a peaceful passenger liner with many women and children aboard. The Persia sank in five minutes and the loss of life was very heavy. Sir John Simon has resigned' from the Imperial Cabinet, hut an optimistic view prevails of the prospects of the pending compulsory legislation. It is again reported that the Allies have effected a new landing in Greece, where the Government is said to be embarrassed by threats on the part of the Central Powers that they will withdraw tlieir representatives unless full satisfaction is obtained from the Allies for the arrest of enemy Consuls at Salonika. Meantime the Allies are continuing to effect numerous arrests of Germans Only minor events are reported in' the Western theatre, but convincing indications are supplied of the superiority of the Allied artillery. Further interesting accounts are ?iven of the withdrawal from Gallipoli. In America the belief is said V) be widespread in ..well-informed circles that Germany is near defeat.
