BOWLS
* WELLINGTON CENTRE'S TOURNEY HIGH WIND & TRICKY GREENS' Tlie Wellington Bowling Centre's annual tournament, which commenced on tho City greens on Saturday, attracted an entry of 58 rinks, which means that 222 bowlers were engaged from 9 a.m. until G. 30 p.m., endeavouring to find "kitty." Under the meteorological conditions that prevailed "kitty" proved a most ohisive object. Throughout the day tlio snn shone out bright and genial, but something approaching a north-westerly gale proved a factor that nonplussed the best of players from time to time, particularly on Hie very keen greens. Perhaps tho glassiest green played on was tho Newtown Club's sward, which tested tho cunning of every player in D Section. The green was in first-class order, bu.t the troublo was caused by tho wind eddies. Tho lower green at Wellington was playing very well, and the Victoria green gave satisfaction. Thorndon was not so fast or keen as tho others, and better work can be accomplished at Hataitai by those who know tho slight idiosyncrases of . that green. On the whole, the play was thoroughly enjoyed by all taking part in the tournament. On this occasion the secretarial work .in connection with the tournament is being attended to by Mr. S. H. Underwood, secretary of the Newtown Club, as Mr. J. J. Roberts (secretary of the Centre) intends leaving town to-day. The Rinks.
