MESSAGES FROM KING, PRESIDENT, AND KAISER
ENGLAND AND FRANCE DETERMINED ANY FALTERING WOULD BE TREASON TO POSTERITY •By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Reo. January 2, 5.5 p.m.), London, December 31. The King sent the following message to M. Poincare, President of France: "At tlio commenoement of the Now Year I desiro to convey my warmest wishes for your welfare and to express my earnest hope that you will enjoy health and strength necessary to enablo you to fulfil your exalted duties. That our two countries have united in common with our Allies in the prosecution of a. groat omifio in tt source of unfailing satisfaction to mo. 'Ilio two peoples are bound by ties which the heroism sad sacrifices of tlioir. gallant sol*
diers and sailors have rendered indissoluble. I beg you to accept, on behalf of myself and the Empire, the most cordial greetings to the great nation over which you preside, and tho expression of deep admiration for the Bplendid qualities of land - and sea forces of France, which in this war have been of such inestimablo value, and offer a sure guarantee of "ultimate victory." PRESIDENT POINCARE'S GRAND SENTIMENTS (Reo. January 1, 5.5 p.m.) , London, January I'. SI. roincare, the President, in a message to tho French troops everywhere, says:— . . ' , ' "France is showing a cold, deliberate determination to hold on and contiuer. The problem does not admit of a half-way solution and any peace offering ambiguous compromises, and bastard combination can only bring breath of deceitful appearances, dishonour, ruin, and enslavement. Who', then, through impatienco and weariness would thus sell to Germany the past and future of France? It is true the war is long, arduous, and sanguinary, but how many sufferings will bo spared ns in future by our sufferings at present? No Frenchman has committed the crime of desiring war, but now with faithful Allies we must carry on to tho annihilation of German' militarism and the complete reconstruction of Franco. Any faltering would be ingratitude to our dead and treason to posterity." THE KAISER'S, BOMBASTIC MESSAGE (Rec. January 2, 5.5 p.m.} London, December 31. The Kaiser's New Year order to the Army and Navy says:— "Comrades, n year of severe fighting has elapsed. Everywhere superior numbers have failed to rusli our lines before your Inyalty and bravery. Everywhere I havo sent you to battle you have gained glorious victories. Thankfully we remember to-day, brethren who have joyfully given their blood in order, to gain security for the beloved ones at home, and imperishable glory ' for the Fatherland. What they began we shall, accomplish with God's gracious help. "In the impotent madness of our enemies in the west, east, north, and south, who still strive to deprive us of all that makes lifa worth living, they have long buried the liopo of conquering us in fair fighting, but believe they can still reckon upon the weight of their masses and the starvation of our entiro people ,and the influence of their campaign of calumny which is. as mischievous as it is malicious, but their plans will not succeed and their hopes will miserably be disappointed. In the present spirit of determination which imperturbably unites the Army and thoso at home with the will to do one's duty to tho Fatherland to the last breath 1 and determination to secure victory. We enter upon tlio Now Year with God for the protection of the Fatherland and for Germany's greatness."
