■ — The Prime Minister, the Right Ho& \\. F. Massey, left Auckland for Wel-i luigton last night, as is duo here this afteraoon. The Hon. J. Allen, Minister of Defence, who went to' Auckland to be pre* sent on the arrival of the hospital ship meet Colonel Logan, Officer Commanding at Samoa, is expected back in Wellington about Wednesday. The Minister of Finance, the Right Hon. Sir J. G. Ward is in Southland, and the Attorney-General, the Hon. A. j.' Heidman, is still in tho Tarawera district. . M. D. Hornsby, Mayor of Carterton, who was operated upon on Christmas Day, died on New Year's .The late Mr. Hornsby was tliirty-mne years of age. He was a ~. ou J' T. M. Hornsby, M.P. for the \\ airarapa, and was practising as a, solicitor in Carterton, and had a brilliant career before him. Ho was occupying the Mayoral chair for a second term. Very widespread sympathy is extended to his parents in their sad bereavement. The funeral will take placo on Tuesday.—Press Association. .

Mr. Ohas. Hil], senr., lias been advised tliat his son Mr.-Alfred Hill lias been appointed professor of harmony and composition to the New South' Wales (Government) Conservatoire of Musicl Mr. Eil.l received his musical education in New Zealand and at Leipzig (Germany). He is well known as the_ composer of tho Maori cantata "Hinemoa" and opera "Tapu." He also produced "When the Empire Calls," a fine patriotic song,, and his "Waiata Poi" (song) has beon sung all over the world. 'Mr. Hill, who was at one time conductor of tlie Wellington Orchestral Society, was conductor of the Exhibition Orchestra at Christchurch in 1906, and subsequently has resided' in Sydney.
Dr. W. J. Porteous, missionary of the Presbyterian Churcfh of New Zealand, stationed at Jagadhri, in tiio Punjab, will leave Welljngton by the s.s. Benin, era, due to sail on Wednesday. Dr. Porteous lias been spending part of his furlough in New Zealand, and is now proceeding to Britain, where he_ expects to spend the remaining time in combined post-graduate study and war service. t He is accompanied by Mrs. Porteous and two of their children.
Mr. G. C. Miller, town clerk of Paliiatua, is in Wellington 'to meet his sonj \ Private J. C. Millof, who returns from the front by the Maheno to-day.
Lieutenant-Colonel F. T. Bellringer, of New Plymonthj'' , has received notice to report at Trentham for duty on January 10.
Mr. J. Rennio, chairman of the Waitara Chamber of Commerce, is on a, business visit to Wellington.
The death of Mr. AV. F. Buckland, an ex-Mayor of Cambridge, occurred suddenly last Wednesday night. The late Mr. Buckland, who was 73 years of age, had been suffering from heart trouble for some years. Mr. Buckland was Mayor of Cambridge from 1899 to 1903, and subsequently from 1905 to 1910. Originally a civil engineer, he later became a barrister and solicitor, practising bis profession for a short time in Auckland, and later at Cambridge. Ha also found time to take an active interest in agricultural pursuits, and was an enthusiastic and successful horticulturist. He was member of Parliament! for Franklin North from 1884 to 1887, and for Manukau from 1890 to 1893. Mrs. Buckland predeceased her husband several years ago. Mrs. J. Phillips, of Inoli, Straits . Settlement, and Mr. C. Channiug Buckland, of Cambridge, are the only surviving members of tho deceased's family.
