Allen, Minister of Do fence, left by last night's Auckland ex< pr.ess. He will take part in the reception to the men on the Maheno, and on Sunday will meet Colonel Logan, Office? in Charge at Samoa, who is coming to New Zealand on leave. The Hon. G. W. Russell pasßetf through Wellington yesterday, on his way to Auckland to take partin the reception to' the wounded soldiers returning by the hospital ship Maheno. A Press Association message from 1 Melbourne states that Mr. Russell Clarke, a Legislative Councillor, and half-brother of Sir Rupert Clarke, hag enlisted. . The Commandant of the New Zealand Military Forces (Brigadier-GeneraJ Robin) left Wellington for Auckland yesterday. Advice lias been received in ton that Mr. A. de B. Brandon, jun., of the legal firm of Messrs. Brandon, His-, lep, and Brandon, has gained a certificate for flying at the aviation base at Hendon, England, .and has also passed his medical examination. When the mail left ho was awaiting directions from the War Office. The Rev. W. Hutchinson, of Maraakakaho, Hastings, left-for Wellington: yesterday morning to join the 9th Rein, forcements as Presbyterian chaplain. The Rev. Dean Smyth, of Meaneo, arrived in town by the Napier express last evening. Sergt. W. A. Mills, of the Sixtft Hauraki Regiment, son of Mr. T. L. Mills, of the Feilding "Star." is among those returning "permanently unfit" by the hospital ship Maheno. He was wounded in tho "Daisy Patch" fight on May 8, but from that injury he ro* covered, and went back to the front. The immediate cause of his roturn was a serious attack of tonsilitis, necessitate ing several operations. Mr. W. G. Wickham, British Trade Commissioner, who has been promoted to the Commissionership of South Africa, left Auckland by the Niagara on Tuesday last, en route for Cape Town, via Canada and England. He will meet his successor, Mr. R. W. Dalton, at Vancouver The death occurred yesterday of Mrs< Youmans, wife of Mr. Fred Youmans, an old resident of Wellington, and well-known member of the Vioton? Bowling Club. During tho absence of Major (Dr.) Elliott as commanding officer of the hos* pital ship Maheno, Dr. Purdy will edit tho "Medical Journal." Colonel Stuart Nowall, who has beon appointed to the command of the new Soldiers' Convalescent Camp at Pukeroa, Rotorua, is well known in Wellington. For some time he was officer commanding the Wellington Military District. He saw service in the Maori War, &n<t he went to South Africa in charge ot one of tho New Zealand Contingents. He was also the officei >n charge of tho special constables in Wellington at tho time of tho strike in 1913. Visitors to Wellington staying at the Albert Hotel are: Sir. James Wall, of To Kuiti, Mr. Graham Hammond,- or Opunake, and Mr. F. O'Connell, of Ohristchurch. .
