THE AUCKLAND CUP WINNER

Balboa, who credited Mr. T. H. Lowry with his second Auckland Cup, was bred by Mr. I. G. Duncan at tho Waikanao Stud, and, liko Bobrikolf, who carricd the Hatrkc's Bay sportsman's colours to victory in tho big race at Ellerslie on Boxing Day threo years back, lie was acquired under somewhat similar circumstances to the celebrated black gelding. At a sale of yearlings bred at Wellington in the summer of 1913 a- chestnut colt by Varco from Nerve took tlio fancy of F. Davis, who has acted as private trainer to Mr. Lowry for a .number of years, and the youngster eventually fell to his bid of 30gns. As was the case with Bobrikoff, Davis resold his yearling purchaso to his employer, and when the youngster came out to race as a two-year-old he carried the gold jacket with navy blue sash and c-ap. As a two-year-old with limited ■opportunities Balboa won stakes to tho value of £n(S, and last season he captured ,£2200. With the Auckland Cup now added to his list of triumphs Balboa's winning total has received a further pronounced lift,' for tho winner's portion of the istake, excluding tho £150 gold cup, works out at <£1750.
