9 " MANAWATU MEETING CHORTLE WINS THE LIVERPOOL HANDICAP. i tSjr Telegraph,—Special Correspondent-.) Palmerston North, December 29. The weather was line overhead for tho ' third day of the Manawatu Racing Club's ' Meeting, but a cold wind blew all day and matters at Awapuni were anything but pleasant. Tlie day's racing was up to the standard of previous meetings, and the fields were larger than on the other two days. Tho machine registered .£23,814, making .£76,573 for the three days, as against ,£84,a3-l for tho threo days last year. There were no scratchings in the opening cvonl, the seven acceptors going to ■ the post. Rumania was again sent out , favourite, Discussion and Gazette being next in demand. The Summit led to tho half-mile, where Discussion took charge ' and won easily at tho finish from Rerehnu. Battle Tide was third, followed by the favourite and The Summit. Those who noticed tho easy finish of Parewanui on Tuesday wero quit© prepared to seo him do better to-day. He started a hot order, and ICew was the host fancied of the others. The favourite won very easily, but Ivew shaped badly and was tailed off the whole way. Whanake nent with Parewanui for half a mile, but then the favourite drew out and 1 was' not extended again. A .faulty jump at tho last fenoo lost him some ground, but he wns soon straightened up, and won oasly from Cyra, Bikahakeko and Aborcoed. The English 'horse Pamnure had a winning turn in the' Opon Welter .Handicap, in' which he started a good favourite, lie was hi the rear to the straight entrance, when Oliver gave him bis head, and the rest was easy. Combustion made a run at him a. furlong from home, but he had no chance of defeating him. Haumakaka was a poor third. Expect, SiT Alba, and Pursefiller wero the withdrawals from the Liverpool Handicap. Chortle was made favourite, and, well handled by S. Beid, he just won from Square Deal after a lucky run on the fencc at the home turn. Goldstream led at the start, but Mystified soon took charge and had a good break going down the track. On the bend the field closed up, and racing into tho straight Square 1 Deal took charge, but he ran very wide and took the field with Mm. This J et • Chortle up on tho fence, and after a good finish ho won by a neck: Byron was two lengths away, withr Mystified and Princess Moutoa up with him. There_ wero ton starters for the Westbiiry Hack Handicap, five furlongs, and tho maehino closed with. Martyress a better favourite than Interlude, with Goldbearing next in favour. Tho pair had tho finish to t-lemselves, and the big gelding won by a length. Sea Lord, Black Lupin, and Asterias; finished in t'liat order. Mia Cara moved down in. a scratchy manner in the preliminary, and on noticing this tha public made Multiplication tlie favourite. It was a noticeable fact that tho favourite scored in the Open Flying Handicap on each day of tho meeting. - In the Hack Welter Handicap the majority of the Tunners were well supported. Merry Dale was the actual favourite, but Pomeroy, Finisterre, and Rerehau ran her close in public estimation. Finisterre led down the back from Wirokino and Black Amber, but' tho last-named was soon done with, Finisterre was well clear, at the straight entrance, but then Pome Toy challenged. Tho chestnut gelding could l not go on, but Rereliau came from behind, and caught the lender, winning a,good race by half a length.
