WANTED AT ONCE
♦ SUM OF £1500 TO HELP THE Y.M.C.A. One of the finest institutions in the City needs money, and needs it badly. I'ho Y.M.C.A. needs £5000 by to-morrow in order to wipe out a mortgage. Mrs. M. A. "Williams generously donated £2000 conditionally on the directors raising the balance (£3000) within a given time—the last day of the period being to-morrow. A big elfort is being made to collect the £3000. Yesterday half the amount (£1500) had been gathered, and an appeal is mado for the remaining. £1500. The appeal is mado to the public in general, as the institution is claimed to bo a national asset. People hardly need reminding that the Y.M.C.A. collected money and materials and put up the fine institute at Trcnthmi, had it enlarged to meet the urgent needs cf tile men, sent a man to take charge of the work there, secured tents for the military work at Awapuni, May Morn, Waikanae, and Tauherenikau, ami anywhere else when the need arose, and put men in charge. It found materials for troopships that have left "Wellington Harbour for the front, such as games, periodicals, pianos, gramapliones, music books, hymn books, testaments, etc. It handed on board hundreds of parcels for soldiers from their friends in the country, and it arranged for scoros of concerts for the men in military camps. It is claimed that had it not been for tho Wellington 'Association, the great work now being done in Egypt amongst New Zealand soldiers would not have come into existence. Over 350 members of the Wellington Y.M.C.A. are either at the front or preparing to go. It is interesting to noto that King George took a leading part three years ago in assisting to clear the debt oft tlio London Y.M.C.A. The Y.M.C.A. doors are open wide from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days in the week to any man seeking advice and friendship. Soldiers in khaki are allowed all the facilities of membership. Donations to Date. The latest donations to the fund aro:
Two Wairarapa residents have promised £100 each and another Wairarapa resident £50, so that a sum of £1500 is still required.
