THE TURF

MANAWATU MEETING RINALDO' WINS THE PRESIDENT'S HANDICAP. EMPERADOR'S STAKES. (I)y telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Palmerston North, December 28. Rain fell jn the early morning at Awapuiii, but (lie weather cleared as the day wore on, and it remained fine for the races. The attendance was not as large as oh the opening day. The racing was good, and some close finishes took place, 'i'ho Palmerston North Stakes went to the favourite, Emperador, but the race did not result in the hollow victory ex- : pected, and from, a furlong from home right to the winning post Hatch was very uneasy on his mount. The showing of Rangitero was much better than was expected of him, and tbe sou of, PapaIcura should not be long in winning a handicap. The totalisator put through -624,838. as compared with <t'2S,(K)2 for the corresponding day last year. The eight acceptors all went to the post for the Kelvin Hack Handicap, Discussion (C. Eiiierson) being favourite. Rereliau was the first to show the way, followed by Tho Summit and Discussion, At the top turn this' pair headed her, while Rumnnia moved up. At the distance the latter came with, a fast run, and won comfortably by half a length from Tho Summit. Rereliau was close up, and then came Discussion and Ararat. There was another small field in the Hurdles, but this time the public gauged the form correctly, though the issue was very close. Hikakaheke wiis sent out favourite, and he duly won, but it was only after a very close finish with Parev<anui. Oyra led for. a time, with Parewanui next. The favourite, who. was jumping: well, ran up to' the last-named at the half-mile, and after an interesting finish the pair being picked right out, the favourite won ■ by a neck. Glenorchy-was four lengths away. Despite his steadier of, lOst. 51b., Multiplication was a four figures favourite in the Highden Hack Handicap/ but though he put up a great effort the weight told and Tango, who is on the irnprove, beat him. Merry Andrew led for half a mile, ami then finished third. Crown Imperial and Molly Hawk were in the rear the whole way. ' ' Montana was withdrawn from the President's Handicap, leaving ten runners. .It was an interesting race, and run at a clipping- pace the whole way. Sedd-el-Balir was favourite, but he failed to jump off ivell, and lost several lengths. Taringamutu led a- bunched field for- a mile, when Welcome : Nugget and Rinaldo. raced to the head of affairs, and in a finish the latter reveraed the Cup running, and won by half a length. Orleans fas clnso up third, and then came Goldstream and Sedd-el-Bahi. The win of Rinaldo was anticipated by his connections', as he had got a bad passage on tho opening day. ' . ( Emperador stripped in great fettle for the Palmerston North Stakes, and he was made a hot favourite. The field was not up to the standard, of prerious years, and Of the others Hythread was the- best supported. From a good start the favourite seemed to be tho first to. move, ;and with Parifonn he led down the back. On the bend Rangitero .joined him on the outside and Hythread got through- (JJ. the fence. A furlong from home the trio were even, and a shout-"wcnt up that tho favourite was beaten, but once on the good going the bay gelding came again and won by half a length. Hythread was two lengths off, and Pariform and Native Lady wore well back. The winner did liot act too well ill th« heavy going on the turn,, but on . top of the ground he was. a different horse. The winner was a competitor 1 in the same race last year, when he occupied the position of runner-up to Gladiole. ' Nino acceptors faced the barrier in the Terrace Welter Handicap, in which Arlington carried the bulk, of the support, though there was also a lot of support for Black Ada- and Merry Dale. ' Black Ada was first, and lord Ainslie last, to get going. The mare shoiyed the way to the home turn, . where , her nearest attendants wore - Arlington, ' Waitomo, Pomeroy, and Merry Dale. , The latter two came through their ' field at the distance, the Porirua mare scoring. by a short half-length, with' a. neck between tli'e next two. Lord Ainslie made up a lot of ground and finished fifth. I'enis Orrne was looked to to provide the winner in the Aivapuni Handicap, and she did not disappoint her supporters, the, mare leading all the way. She won by a long neck after holding off a fast run by the imported Panmure. The little-fancied Jean Laddo was a length away third. Postillion was second at the home turn, but faded away. Jem scored comfortably in the Himatangi Welter Handicap, and his support, ers wero wefl repaid. Ardent was favourite, but had to be content with second place. ' ' THE RESULTS.
