THE ISONZO RIVER
♦ The Isonzo, along the banks of which our Italian Allies are gallantly fighting their way, played an important -part in tlw early history of modern Italy, and may be dimly remembered bv the few people who have really rend through Gibbon's "Decline and Fall.'' It is the ancient Son tins, a bridge over which was the military key of Italy. This was strongly [ortilicd, and checked for a timo the advance of Maximin; and it was here that Odnacer was defeated in a decisive battle bv Theodorie, the Ostrogoth. Hcrodian, 1090 years ago, correctly described the Isonzo as "a largo and formidable stream, especially in spring; and summer, when fed by tlio melting of Ilia Alpine snows."
