CATHOLIC PICNICS
AT KARORI PARK.
Great numbors of people made their way to Karori Parle yesterday, where a picnic was held under the auspices of the Roman Catholic Education Board. Very excellent arrangements were niado to convoy people to the ground, thero being 110 fower than eight special ciir- ' loads of merry children. Tho young ones were also conveyed to their homes by special trains. Archbishop Redwood and Coadjutor O'Shea were among tho jnany present. All nianuar of amusements were provided, chief among which wero side-shows. A lengthy sports programme was provided for the children, and a most enjoyable day was marred only by a slight shower at midday. Tho following committee worked bard for tho success of the outing:— Messrs. J. J. L. Biirlce, P. H. Hoskins, L. T. Reichel, A. Cassie, W. F. Johnson, F. J. O'Driscoll, B. A. Guise, H. M'Keown, T. O'Brien, D. M'Phee, M. Walsh, W. Gamble, and T. H. Forster. Tho proceeds of the picnic will go towards tho maintenance of the Soman Catholic schools conducted by tho Wellington Catholic Education Board. Baby, show (girls under 18 months): Mrs. England's baby 1, Mrs. Moriarty's 2. Baby show (boys under 18 months): Mrs. Taylor's boy 1, Mrs. James' 2. AT FATHER LANE'S GROUNDS. In spite of a somewhat dull, and at times threatening, day, Dean Lane's picnic held at Lower liutt was a great success. About one thousand people attended, and during the afternoon Sir Joseph and Lady Ward visited the grounds. An energetic committee, of which Messrs. D. L. M'Kay and M. J. Hodgina were joint secretaries, was responsible for the promptness with which the various events were produced. Considerable interest wa6 shown in tho children's dancing,' of which Mr. A. J. Monro was the judge, Piper Patterson supplying the music. The Petone Municipal Band, under Bandsman M'Arthur, played selections throughout the day. Mesdames Connelly, Patterson, Kcogii, and Patten were in charge of the refreshment rooms. The racing judges wero Messrs. Hiokev and Seymour, Mr. M. Wolcli starter, and Mr. W. Hayes handicappcr. Tho results of tho sports were as follow:—100yds. handicap: O'Sullivan Gyds.) 1, Cooper (syds.) 2. Hop, step, and jump: O'Sullivan (41ft. Sin.) 1, Collaty (41ft. 4in.) 2. Twomey (14 rings in 31Jsec.) 1, Far/ley (13 rings in 32sec.) 2. Highland fling: Miss A. Campbell 1, Miss L. O'Loary. 2.' Irish jig: Miss L. O'Learv 1, Miss R. Westwood 2, .Miss Campbell 3. Sailors' hornpipe: Miss L. O'Learv 1, Miss J. Jelly 2. The judge expressed a desire to have the Highland fling repeated for the benefit of the previous unsuccessful competitors, adding that he would present three prizes on his own account. The statement was warmly applauded, and this event resulted: Master W. Brown 1. Miss V. Campbell 2, Miss J. Campbell 3. A Highland reel was gracefully danced by Misses O'Learv, Campbell, Weatw'ood, and Jelly.
