TARATAHI-CARTERTON

CUP WON BY BUNTING. uTNG OF ATHOL WINS A DOUBLE. Although the Taratahi-Carterton Racing Club's annual meeting has, in .recent years, lost some of its former importance, the 'crowd attending, yesterday's fixture on the Clarovillo racecourse was a re"minder, of the. attendances at previous meetings when horses of the calibre of Eduitas and Taiigimoana were competitors. Yesterday's gathering, however, ineluded upwards of a thousand soldiers, }viio were present as guests of'tho club, land for tliem the racing no doubt proved a welcome change to the strenuous life in camp. During the interval following the principal event, the club's president (Mr. H. E.. Bunny) appealed to those present on tho course to give their fieldglasses for tho uso of the soldiers at tho front. Ho set tho example by handing in liis own, and others among tho crowd subsequently followed with theirs, Showers of rain had fallen in the district during the morning, but tho. wither was fine for tho racing, and tho track and the grounds wero in good order. Fields were rather below .the average size, but the racing proyed interesting enough and while the two principal events wei'b won by good favourites —Bunting and Lady Black—in other instances heavily backed candidates suffered defeat. When competing in the Wairarapa County Cup, the Trentham-train- ' ed mare, Plunder, broke a fetlock and it was found necessaTy to destroy her.' Tho totttlisatw investments for tho day amounted to £9490 as compared with a total of .£8923 at last year's fixture.
