CUP WON BY WELCOME NUGGET. (From Our Own Correspondent').) Palmerston N., December 27. Tho heavy rain whicJi fell overnight and right up to Starting time, seriously interfered with the attendance at Awapuni to-day. There were numerous scratching:) and the fields were smaller than are usually seen on the opening day of this meeting. The totalisator figures fell off, the machine recording J1'27,894, as against .£32,992 last year. Tho racing was interesting, but only two favourites were successful during the da - Tlie Cup went to the Bushy Park-bred Welcome Nugget, who was ridden in behind for a mile, and then took charge at the turn and outstayed the others. He was well handled by M. M'Donald. Scratchings reduced the field in the Trial Plate to six runners and Merry Dole was a slightly better favourite than Marcavis. Namur led till the straight was reached, when Merry Dale and Marca'nis rah up to her. Marcanis was soon done with and then' Black and Amber I. and Lord Ainslie came on the scene, and in a good finish the pair accounted for tho favourite. Marcanis was fourth and Namur next. Harem Skirt w;as beaten oil. Aruake and Lady Nolan were scratched for the Hurdles, leaving three starters; Hikakaheke was better favourite than Glenorchy with Cyra the outsider. The, last-named made the running for a mile when he fell back beaten. The other pair .went on together, hut Glenorchy jumped the best, and after a good finish won by a neck. Cyra was tailed off. There were nine runners in the Gillies Hack Handicap. Martyress and Pomeroy were the best backed' on the machine. The start .was a good ohe and for a furlong Multiplication,'Eron Boy, Martyrcss I and Pomeroy ran in. a . line. The top-, weight'was'then steadied and Pomeroy lost his position. ETon ' Boy , and Martyress came into the straight together, but the top-weight then appeared and he and Martyress left the field.
