NAPIER'S MARDI GRAS

Napier's great annual two-day- carnival, the Slardi Grns, commenced today in most adverse weather conditions, siicwers of rain being experienced at intervals throughout the day. Despite this, Napier was crowded for the oecation, and every hotel, and accommoda-tion-house was taxed to its utmost capacity. _ A procession over a mile long contained numerous novel and attractive features a Maori Queen being most prominent. The procession passed along the Marine Parade and through the city in a deluge of rain, the ute Leing lined with thousands of people. The Mardi Gras, ( tho net proceeds of which are for the Wounded Soldiers" Fund, was continued in the afternoon and evening and will go on again tomorrow. There were seventy-four exhibits m the procession, winch was viewed by about 20,000 people. Late in the afternoon sunny weather prevailed, and M'Lean Park was visited by about 15,000 people, who witnessed a programme of sports, baud concert, and the usual carnival attractions. The proceeds of the gathering will go to the Wounded Soldiers' Funds. > The amount is not yet available. (
