THE TURF
— NOTES AND COMMENTS v TO-DAY'S RACES. IBr I'ir.E.vcos.l Sjioi'tomen will have much to interest them to-day, for important race meetings aro being held all over the Dominion. THE JrANAWATU MEETING. Those who attend nt Aivapuni to-day will have the satisfaction of knowing that they are assisting the Patriotic Fund for the Jrannwatu Club has decided to devote the whole of the profits to the Wounded Soldiers'' Fund. For this reason no complimentary tickets will be issued, but season tickets for both ladies and gentlemen can ho obtained at the gates. Wellington patrons cau leavo by the 7.10 a.in. train from Thorndon, or any of the mail trains, as arrangements have been made for all trains to stop at Awapuni, both going and coming. The Trial Plato is the first race at Armpuni, and will be started punctually at noon. The Highden horse I'amnure may be .fancied, with Merry Dalo and' Marcavis the choice of the others. There will be only four starters in the Hurdles, and the Gisborne-owned Hikahnkeke may carry most support. For the Gillies Hack Handicap, six furlongs, Pcarlfo'rm and Martyress, who are 011 the same mark, may be the public fancies, but 011 form the two top weights, Multiplication and Tavistock, are entitled to consideration. In the Cup, the Ha,wera-traincd Welcomo Ifttgget may go out as first c.'.oice if a good rider is obtained. He is ricely weighted with 7st. Sib., nirl has won over the distance. Rinaldo, Bst. 91b., has his second to Indigo in the Metropolitan Handicap to Tecommend him, but he is a very unlucky horse, and seems fated to run.: into a place in.all big events. Master Lupin is much fancied in AVanganui, but he may be found short of a race, and should do better as the meeting progresses. A similar remark applies to sir Alba, who is well >n with 7st. 21b The biggest field of the day .will he seen out in the Juvenile Handicap, for two and three-year-olds. Tango w.ill probably start in this event in preference to the Trial Plate, and it' the half-sister to Pavlova is any good she should show up, as she is meeting the best two-year-olds on even terms. The liatdicapper says thd. best of the youngsters is Hythread, and in this judgment many people will concur. Hinemanu, who stays well, may' be the best of the lot in the Hack Welter Handicap, but if a surprise is in store it might come from Rerchau, who got left at Woodville, and then finished on better than any of her opponents. Despite, his big weight, "Croesu.s will be well fancied in the Fitzherbert Handicap, six furlongs. Mia Cara has several wins to her credit this season, and of t«\<! lightweights, Sea Lord reads well with Bst. 101b. ■ The day's racing .will conclude with tho Grandstand Handicap, in which Expect is the 9st. horse. At Woodville, Pursefiller ran a great race in the big .handicap on the second day, and if : she reproduces this form slie should be tho hardest to beat. Princess Houtoa, who is coming on, may get on the winning list ere the meeting ends. TARATAM-CARTERTON MEETING. Special trains will leave Lambton Station for Clareville 6.-10 a.m. and 8.30 a.m. to-day. There is a big field in tho Trial Plate, five furlongs, in which tho Trenthamtraiued Nennon may carry most support. In tho Belvedere Hack Handicap, six furlongs, Marsinah and Onuesby may be found fighting out tho iinisli. Trials, who figures in this race, may bo reserved for the Railway Handicap later in the day, when he will take on Lady Black at adifference of 241b. The Clareville-traincd Thoughtful, , : a place-getter in several events last season, may carry most support in the Hack Welter Handicap. 1 Bunting, a stable companion of Trials, may be the Cup favourite. For tho Dash Hack Handicap, Lady Vladimir and Ormesby, who will bo making his second appearance during tho. afternoon, may cijrry most support. THE AUCKLAND MEETING. Of the meetings which take place at a distance, local sportsmen will bo most interested in the decision of tho events at Ellorslie. The Cup and Railway .Handicaps have been much discussed since the appearance of the weights, and the decision of the Foal Stakes will also be awaited with interest. For the Shortlaiul Plate, a race with special weights and allowances, Dribble. 7st. 21b., may be the choice, but Wishful and Red Ribbon will each have plenty of supporters. • ■ • Report says F. Davis is going to rely on Bjornebnrg for the Trial Stakes, and the assumption is that he is superior to Egypt. Nystad will have an army of admirers, so will Hythus and Auckland's best two-year-old, Lady Jack. The Yaldhurst stable will run 'l'ho Toff, who is credited with being , a greatly improved colt. Since being at Ellerslio he has not been beaten in a track gallop. Mountain Dream, a winner of an open Welter Handicap at Wingattti in the spring, must be accounted remarkably well handicapped in the RobinWi Handicap, seven furlongs, with only 31b. above tne minimum. The Mountain King showed up well in open company at Ricearton in November, so something should be expected of her in hack company at Ellerslie. The Cup is regarded as a good handicap, and though Balboa may bo favourite, tho fact that tho chestnut has done, very littlo racing will go against him. War'step has worked well 011 the tra'cks, and 'has carried F. E. Jones in all her gallops. Southerners say Snub is within a stone.of her on track work, so on figures in the Cup the three-year-old ought to be a good thing, but his public form so far does not. bear this out, and it will be'no surprise to find the mare in front of him. Blackall lias not been working well, but Mullingar has greatly pleased track watchers, and with Deeley in the saddle, the Marble Arch gelding should give a good account of himself. ' In the Grafton Hurdles, Master Rejpl; a good performer in tije' north, may hut! it hard to give 16lb. to Naupata and 201b. to Vascular. Bimcter, who looked likely to carry | most support in the Railway Handicap, has been under a cloud the last couple of days, and King Lupin, a previous winner of the race, may displace him frovn the position of favourite. Aucklanders will not hear of the defeat of the chestnut gelding, whom the; aver is better now than ever he was. Tete-a-Tete, Chakwann (who has galloped well since arriving at Ellerslie), and Hyginas will all come in for solid support. If The Toft is successful in the Foal. Stakes, Sasanoff, who finished' in front of hi in at Riccarton, will bo in demand in the Nursery Handicap. Tho Martian gelding was very backward at Riccarton, but he ran Nystad to a neck in a two-year-old handicap. . ■. The Christmas Handicap, one mile, will give backers a lot of trouble to ' find a favourite. Gold Soult, Bertrada, and Soultaue may carry most support.-
