Some little time back "Shipping lllub- V trated" of New York reported, that the • Pacific Coast Steamship Company would v conduct experiments in a tugboat vrith a t view to testing the possibilities of using pulverised coal as a marine fuel. It ap- 1 pears that where railroads have used this system the, records show that tho pulvcr- C ised coal produces more steam than coal in its ordinary form, and that smoke. is p eliminated. Dust and ashes aro carried oil in the exhaust, and there is a saving V of 15 to 20 per cent, in the. quantity of t coal consumed, complete consumption taking place. The pulverised coal is fed into a blower by a gravity convoyer, and blower shoots it into the firebox, where I air combustion takes place in a similar J way to that of oil burners. It is thought A possible that the present oil-burning sys- o terns on steamships can be partially used * for burning pulverised coal. c o "> • 1 (< MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. t Mr. N. F.
