NATIONAL RESERVE

THE ISLAND BAY COMPANY. An enjoyable smoke concert was held on Tuesday evening by the Island BayBerhampore Company of the National Reserve in the Berhampore Hall. Major Wells presided and Colonel. PorC.8., Commandant of the Reserve, was present. The principal item ; was the presentation of a liandsome silvei vegetable dish and cake-stand, suitably engraved, to the instructor, Mx■ C. N. Haslam, in recognition of his untiring efforts to promote the welfare of the company, and as a token of the high esteem in which he is held by all ranks. The presentation was made by tho chairman who was supported by Mr. H. Ivory, as representing the rank and file. A further presentation was that of the trophies won in the recent shooting competition, the winner being Private G. Cade, with Corporal H. S. Gilberd second, and Private Kennedy runner-up, the presentation being made by Captain Landsdowne-Hiclcs. Musical items wero given by Messrs. Huggins, C. Proctor, F. Proctor, and Warwick; songs by Colonel Porter, Messrs. F. Williams, C. Proctor, F. Proctor, Hand, *Mollison, Huggins, Tansle'y, and Thomasj while Messrs. Sedgbeer and Whitelaw proved the'mselves capablo raconteurs. The balance-sheet of tho recent entertainment given in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall by the Purple Courtiers, on behalf of the company, was read by Mr. Warwick, sec-ro-tary of the committee, and showed a highly satisfactory result. The parades of tho company hare been suspended until January 25, on account of the holidays.
