WANTED—FIELD GLASSES
& AN URGENT NEED. Information received locally from responsible officers at the.front stating ail absolute need for field glasses, has given rise to a movement to procure glasses for officers leaving with the reinforcements, and it is understood that if the glasses can ho secured the Government will undertake t'o distribute tliem where they will he of most service. One highly-placed officer,'writing recently from tho firing line, strongly urged that non-coiiimissioned officers as well as officers should bo supplied with glasses, the officer in .question estimating t'ho active service value of six or seven pairs of glasses as being equal to ono machine-gun. It is impossible to ■purchase the necessary glasses in Now Zealand, and further supplies cannot bo secured from abroaid, so that it is only by gifts that tho shortage can be mado up. A suggestion lias beon made that many sporting men who are the owners of glasses, would, if they realised the need, make a sacrifice by handing their glasses over to the military men and so assist them in the difficult work they are about to undertake. It is understood that something iu the nature of an appeal to the sporting public will be inade_ during the holiday season, and if this is done racing men in particular will no doubt demonstrate that they are not slow to relinquish their prized glasses for use in the most serious busines men can engage in.
