LABOUR ON THE WHARVES
-# POINTS IN DISPUTE.' Recently two deputations from the Wellington Wharf Labourers' Union have waited upon the Harbour Board to draw attention to various matters concerning conditions of labour. On one point, the places at which labour shall be engaged, the two deputations wero not in agreement. Last night the Harbour Board decided to forward the following reply to the Wellington Wharf Labourers' Union respecting tho matters. brouglit forward bv deputation:— *(1) With reference to rates paid to men employed in outside wool stores ' the board, whilst unable to impose any discriminatory rate on wool pressed in outside . stores, thanks the union for the facts it adduced, aiid is pleased to know that tho union recognises the fair conditions prevailing in the board's employment. . (2) That with regard to use of tile men's waiting-room in the "X" Store building as a place for engagement of, labour, the board, after .having , fully considered ■ the question, cannot see its ;way to accede to the request, but affirms the desirability'of'the rooni con-' tinuing to be used as a waiting-room only. , (3) That'with respect to the appomtment of odd men to gangs, the wharfinger has been directed to give seniority t'iie preference, all other things bemg equal. , , (4) That with respect to extra labour for double diimps of_ wool, the board will'continue to provide'an extra man per truck wherever rails or other obstructions have to be - crossed, or wherever tho wharfinger deems such extra man necessary.
