Cowio in Masterton for the last few months, lias been accepted for servica abroad, and will go into camp at Trentham on January 9. Mr M. Juriss, who was at one time a member of the N.Z.R.A., has received a commission afi socoixl lieutenant in the "King's Own," the tenth battalion of the Royal Lancasters Regiment. When lie last wrote he was stationed with his regiment at Wareham, Dorset, England. Mr. J. H. Carrad, who is leaving tlio staff of'the Magistrate's Court in Wellington to go on transfer to the position of clerk of tlio court at Oamaru, was farewellod by his colleagues on the. eve of his departure. A presentation was made on oohalf of the staff by Mr. W. G. Riddell, Senior Magistrate. Pipe-Major M'Donald, of tho Waxrarapa Caledonian Pipe Band, is enlisting for service abroad. •. . v The Minister of Militia in Canada; (Sir Saaiiuel Hughes) belongs to a distinguished fighting family. His sou Garnet has the brevet rank of briga-dier-general, and lias a command in Flanders; liis brother, Brigadier-General John Hughes, commands the Canadian caniD at Valcartier; and two .other brothers*are Colonel W. St. Plena Hughes, commanding the 21st Oversßaa Battalion of Canadians, ■ and Colonel Dr. James L. Hughes, of Toronto.
