According to an exchange Captain Chudleigh. marine superintendent of the Shayr, Savill, and Albion Company, recently visited Wanganui and inspected the harbour ■works, in company with the board's, engineer (Mr. Howorth). Captain Chudleigh s visit was in connection with ascertaining the suitability of Wanganui as a port which to extend operations of the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company, and, as a result of his inspection, he is fully satisfied with the port's prospects. He expressed approval of the board' 6 schemo, and considers the approach from the sea and the width between the moles satisfactory for handling big vessels, and the turning basin and wharf would. meet- requirements for some time to come. Captain Chudleigh said that, given sufficient water, his company's boats would certainly include Wanganui in their itinerary.

S.S. KENT CHANGES HANDS. The Federal Steam Navigation Company's 6tcamcr Kent has been disposed of to British buyers for a sum not yet announced, states the "Sydney Shipping Lißt." United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand regularly since her launch, but has become too small for the trade, and has had to give way to newer and larger carriers. MFjSS-TABLE GOSSIP. Mr. It. In about a fortnight's time the U.S. and A. Line's Cauastota is expected to leavo New York for Auckland and Wellington. Provided the Panama Canal is open for traffic by then, she should reach this port about the middle of February, and will subsequently visit Australian ports. The Vacuum Oil Company's chartered steamer Baron Cawdor is now fully due at Auckland from New York. From tho northern port the vessel will come on to Wellington, subsequently visiting Lyttelton and Dunedin to complete discharge. On completion of discharge of New York cargo at Australian ports the Barber liner Themis will come across to New Zealand to load wool on behalf of Mr. G..H. Scales for America. It is intended that the well-known barque Hazel Craig shall have her name changed to White Pine, and arrangements will be made forthwith. Quite recently tho sailer was purchased by the White Pine Ship Company, of Sydney. The four-masted American schooner J. W. Clise, 715 tons, has been chartered to load at Puget Sound for New Zealand ports. Laden with a full load of bananas tho Karamu arrived in port from Suva early yesterday morning. Her departure from the Fijian port was delayed ' for some time owing to a- member'of the stokehold crew deserting when the vessel was on the point of sailing. After three hours had elapsed a black boy was secured to take his place. The Hinemoa is attending to the beacon at Astralabe t,o-day, and is expected to make port this evening. At noon to-day the Union steamer Kauri is expected to leave here for Napier and San Francisco with a full load of wool.
