The Hon. J. Allen (Minister of Defence), arrived. in Wellington yesterday morning by the Auckland express.

Tlio Minister of Education (the Hon, J. A. Hanan). has left' for tlie south. He will pay an official visit to the Otekaieke institution, and subsequently proceed to Southland.

A cablegram received privately in Wellington, states that Major W. F. G. Levin, of Great-ford, has been dangerously wounded. Major Levin, wlio is attached to tho Wellington Mounted Corps, went out with tho Second Reinforcements.

Div C. D. Henry has returned from his holiday, and lias resumed practice.

Private news has been received by Mr. G. H. Scales, of Lower Hutt, of the death from enteric fever of his son Arthur. Tho late Mr. Scales was a member of the Ist Reinforcements. He was attacked with fever at the Dardanelles and .was removed to Oxford Hospital, where he died. , This is the second son lost to Mr. Scales through the ivar, Mr. Jack Scales having been .killed in action, while his third son, Mr. Athol Scales, is now laid up in London suffering from malaria. Sir. Pettigrew,, a member of the Ashfield Bowling Club, Sydney, and who has been singles champion of Western Australia, is at present n. visitor to Wellington. .

Letters reeoived from Egypt convey the news that Staff-Sergeant Keith Little (formerly of tho literary staff of I'he Dominion) has been suffering from aii attack of onteric fever, but so far his case lias not been chronicled among the official records. When the last mail left, lie was weak, but convalescent.

Mr. W. J. Meredith,- the well-known Rugby referee, has been transferred from the Wellington to the Auckland Telegraph Office. Lieutenant G. M. Niccol,, only son of Mr. George Niccol, of Auckland, cabled to his father this week that he is at present in London on leate. Lieutenant Niccol, was in England at t!he outbreak of. waxy and with several other y-lung Aucklanders. enlisted in _ King Edward's Horse.-. Later he -received a commission in tlie Royal / Field Artillery, and he has been at the front in Handera since Juno., -At the office .of the Labour Department oil Monday afternoon farewell was tendered Mr. W. Rapley, who has been promoted from Inspector of Factories in Wellington to Boot Inspector and Inspector of Factories at Invercargill. Mr. Rapley was presented with a- photograph of tho Wellington staff, and. his confreres wished him success.
