He was ; educated at the Liverpool High School, 1 University College, London, and at Heidelberg. He was Professor of Chem- : istry at Owens College,- Manchester, : 3857-58, and was Emeritus Professor, Owens College, Victoria University, since 1887. He sat! in -the House' 'of Commons as member for the Southern Division' of Manchester from 1885 to 1895. He was the President of ' the Society of Chemical Industry in 1881, and P r »isident of the Chemical 'Society i in .1882. (He also held various other appointments. 'He was the author 1 of ■ several works on chemistry. ;
