MOBILISED AT LAST

FOR WAR

STIRRING MESSAGE. TO THE ARMY IN-FRANCE

There are messages to-day both from the retiring Commander of the British armies in; France and Flanders and from his successor. In an inspiring farewell order to the troops whom, in his own words, it is the pride and glory of his life to have commanded during sixteen months of incessant fighting, Viscount French declares his firmest conviction that a giprious ending to. their splendid and heroic efforts is not far distant. Sir Douglas Haig's contribution to the news is .in account of a. German attack on the Ypres salient, which completely broke down' in face of, the British defence. There are more stories of a coming attack upon the Suez Canal, one message asserting that half a million Turks and 50,000 Germans are available for this enterprise, hut some correspondents express the opinion that these threats are an example of German bluff. In the Balkans the Bulgarians are said to be turning their attention to an invasion of 'Albania, which is,now defended by 80,000 Italians as well as by a, numerous-Serbian force. There is no word as yot of any attempt by the enemy t-o cross the Greek frontier in order to attack the Allies on the approaches to Salonika. A neutral writer in tho London Press gives a-highly interesting account' of the giant strides'made in the development of war industries, in' Great Britain. The whole of the North Country, he says, is turned into one vast arsenal.
