TOILERS OF THE SEA ■ ■ _ \ SEVERAL OF THEM IMPRISONED... Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., presided at Saturday's sitting of the Magistrate's Court, when a seaman named Peter Foley •was charged with deserting from the s.S. Maitai. Hig desertion had caused the Union Company a considerable amount of trouble, but a heavy penalty was not asked for. Tho Magistrate imposed a • sentence of 48 hours' imprisonment. William Hindmarsh, Harold Stene, Hogbart Patterson, Oscar Bergsthrom, William Rode, John Nichelmson, and Harold Bergerson were convicted of having absented themselves from the Norwegian tramp steamer Themis on Thursday last, without first obtaining leave. A sentence of three days' gaol was imposed in overy case, the men to ''be placed aboard the steamer becore she sails this afternoon. A GAME OF TWO-UP. Four men named Richard Wobbley, Al- - bert Weeks, DAniel M'Lennon, and John O'Brien pleaded guilty to a charge of playing two-up on tho Railway Wharf on Friday. A fine of 40s. was imposed in all torn* cases, the alternative being ' sAen days' imprisonment. Mr. E. J. Fitzgibl3oii appeared for Wobbley and for Weeks. • OTHER CASES. For insobriety the following persons were penalised:—William i'iorney, .fames Cameron, and Alexander M'Phce, fined 405., with the option of a week's imprisonment; Joseph Keys, fined 205., with the option of three days' imprisonment. Two charges ,of indecency at Wadestown last week were preferred against a man named Gordon Holmes Barrett on Friday afternoon. Mr. D. G. A.. Tlio action was defended on the'around that the bath was damaged ill transit. The Magistrate' nonsuited the plaintiff company, with '-Bs. costs, the defendant's solicitor being allowed Is.
