NOTES AND COMMENTS

IBt 'jlehcoe.l for-> the Stratford meeting close to-night. Up till 9 o'clock to-iiiglit Secretary A. E. Whyte will take entries for all events in connection with the Wellington Racing Cub's Summer Meeting to be held on January 20, 22, and ii. The programme is a. most attractive one, and well worth the consideration of owners. All classes of horses are catered for, and when the lists closc to-night it will probably be with record, entries. Mr. Coyle's' adjust- . liients will be,made at the close of the Now Tear racing. , The acceptances for the Auckland Cup are better than was expected. Only Jack Delaval and Liidy Penury dropped out, but it is expected that Merry; Hoe, St. Elmn, and Christine will be missing when tho field goes to the post. Balboa is still favourite, two points clear of Blackall, Warstep, and Snub, who are on the same mark". ' , Nenno (Achilles—Chinwag), who is now a member of A. Goodman's team, was thought good enough as a two-year-old .to be taken to Randwick by It. J. Mason. Oil tho tracks there sho coujd beat any- , thing she wprked with over a short course, but her public efforts were disappointing,' and recently Mason quitted her for a more song. . Depredation, who struck himself somo time back and had to bo thrown out of work, will make his reappearance under silk at the Taranaki meeting. The Gampfire horse is a gross customer, and is generally a much better horso for a race. This, was the experience with him at Waliganui in the spring.- On the first day he started a good" favourite, but ran badly, and the next day won nicely. ' The name 'of Hyginas did not appear amongst the list of acceptances for tho Railway Handicap, but he is in the race, and is the sole .representative of the ICaramu stables. He will bo ridden by J. Buchanan. In the Auckland Cup, P. E. Jones will ride Warstep, C. Browne Colonel Soult, J. O'Shea Balboa, 0. Emerson Blackall, B. Deeley Mullinjar, and G. Clarke Snub. Lady Aniai figures amongst , the acceptances for the Taranaki and Ellerslie meetings, which are run on the same day. Maniaroa is another horse with a dual engagement, the Foxton-trained animal being in at both the Mauawatu .and Ellerslio meetings. • Jockey J. Howden, who 'is at present in camp , with the Ninth Reinforcements, will get his final, leave this week, and will be Tiding at the New Plymouth* meeting. One of his mounts will bo Knocknagow in the Hurdles. By a curious coincidence all tho winners at Newmarket on one day recently were bred by their owners—a circumstance that is probably unique in the history of an afternoon's racing. Mr. G. D. Greenwood's Charlemagne II * gelding Emperador, who lias won the Manawatu Stakes for two'years in succession, should go very near winning tho other classic of that club, the Palmerston North Stakes, this month. I Ho has been doing rpally good work lately, and this season will not havo the 10lb. penalty which he succeeded in carrying in his efforts in tlio Manawatu Stakes. Albuma, a five-year-old maro by Martian—Ailsa, was among tho winners at Menanglo Park Meeting (N.S'.W.) on December 7. She was bred by Mr. J. l'\ Reid, and is the first winner, left by the Wallace mare, who showed good form in Now Zealand eight or nino years ago when carrying Mr. J. Brett's colours. Tho brood mare Golden Rose, by St. Leger—Bangle, died recently in Auckland. Sho had a colt this season to Royal Soult (Soult—Bavaria), but the youngster only lived a few days. Golden Rose was foaled in 1897, and her chief racing exploit-was to win the Auckland Racing Club's Easter Handicap in 1903. Coromandel (by Menschikoff) and Yankee Doodlo (by Wairiki) were her best contributions to tho Stud • Book. . Tho presence of Pantnure in the Trial Plate at the Manawatu meeting may frighten out a few of the other acceptors. The English horso has a smart stylo of galloping, and his creditablo showing in the Oroua Stakes at Feilding may mako liim a popular fancy in tho opening ovent at Awapuni. A Press Association message from Mel- . bourno states tliafc J. N. Macgrcgor, tho j jockey, has enlisted. . ' FIXTURES. f Doc. 27.—Taratahi-Carterfon B.C. Annual. ' Dec. 27 and 28.—Thames J.C.
