PROJECTED ATTACK ON THE SUEZ CANAL

KITCHENER HAS THE SITUATION WELL UNDER CONTROL. | By Telofraph—Pr«E6 Association—Copyright ("Times" and Sydney "Sun" Services.; * i , (Rec, December 18, 5.5 p.m.) '■ London, December 17, > Forecasts of tho German offensive are arriving from all quarters. Tho most serious deal with Egypt, which the enemy truculently promises to invade. diversion of Dutch liners may be duo to German advertisements of anti-Egypt plans. Experts discount the excuse that there is no coal. The enemy's plans are known. • Tlioy have most carefully laid a waterpipe accompanying the light Sinai railway, but far from the Canal. After tho recent raids numerous mines were fished out of the Canal, and most of the traffic is done during daylight, so that there is positively, no danger. Lord "Kitchener has the- whole situation well controlled; the Mediterranean armies are now enormous, well-placed, and mobile. The "Daily News's" military-expert points out that the Canal is the most vulnerable point, involving India, and the Dominions, therefore the utmost preparations are required to .meet a second attempt at- invasion, which] it is known is being planned. It is estimated that troops can be brought from Constantinople to Beersheeba in four days. The Germans are preparing with foresight,, energy, and thoroughness. There is no' longer doubt that Moissner Pasha, the Bagdad railway engineer, is laj;ing a light railway and pipe line. This will probably strike Akaba, the Suez pilgrim track; thus avoiding the dangerof a sea attack. If success is possible, Mackensou is the man to achieve it. Other exports point out that the attack may come in a month or in tho spring, or tho much-advertised effort may bo a bluff to drive through Mesopotamia. A PAGEANT OR EMPIRE IN EGYPT. (Rec. December 19, 5.5 p.m.) London, Decomber 18. The "Pall Mall Gazette' 6" Cairo correspondent says there is no doubt the winter will witness tho renewal of Turkish attacks on the Suez Canal, with the object of immobilising the largest, possible forces. _ - In Egypt we are rapidly staging a "Pageant of Empire." 'Australians and New Zealanders occupy the Heliopolis Aerodrome; Home troops are stationed at Alexandria and Cairo; Indians are on the Canal, and' a Canadian hospital recently arrived. It only requires South Africans to complete the picture of Imperial unity. •
