Traill; an engineer, whose : work ■in connection .-with the Giant's Causeway is famous, has been put in' complete charge of the electric light and power installation at tlie Studley College for Horticulture, ctc., in England. This consists of a 50 horsepower gas engine and suction, plant driving two dynamos, with a set of accumulators for. the electical lighting and power for running, the dairy and laundry plants, and the incubators for hatching chickens by electricity. _ Previous to her acceptance of this position, Miss Traill .drove tlie college _ motor lorry,, which had been requisitioned by the Government, from Studley to London—a distance of over 100 miles. Patriotic Entertainment at island Bay. A successful entertainment, under the direction of Mrs. Saidie Hill, was given in the Assembly Hall (kindly lent by Mr. Robert Kceue.) on Thursday, assisting artists being: Miss Grace Kennedy (violin), ill'. Huggius ('cello), Miss Nellie Castle (contralto), Mr. Heketa (Maori baritone), Miss Farthers (elocutionist), and Mr. Zante Wood in monologue. Pianoforte items were given by Misses Olivo Tlcrron, Isobel Fairley, Elsboth Bath, tiwladys Hill, _ Marion Samson, Ivy Mills,'Leola Huggins, and Master Gordon Bal'linger. The hall was artistically decorated with evergreens and bunting, lent by Mrs. Dodrell. The piano was lent by the Bristol Piano Co. The funds are to be devoted to the needs of tho Y.M.C.A. military work.

Dr. Elizabeth Gunn, who has been medical inspector under the Education Department, has been appointed by the Defence authorities to the medical staff at Trcntham, with the rank of military captain. She will be in charge of the hospital, which was formerly Mr. Izard's house and which he placed at the disposal of the authorities for that purpose. Tho week has been si strenuous ons for the busy workers at the Town Hall, for those who have been assisting with the plum puddings for the Soldiers' Christmas Dinner, liere have beon some of them who have been at the hall before; nine in tho morning and have not left at night till ten or eleven. The quantities of material that have' been used for the puddings have been very large necessarily, when in weight the whole amount will total 60001b. and the mixing alone has been very heavy work. Yesterday practically saw tho end of the task and to-day tho puddings will be sent to the "Wellington Meat Export Company, for the finishing j touch, the company having volunteered !tc cook them for the committee.. Some were sent out yesterday. A supply of 'housewives ready for use was to be sent to Wanganni this week in response to an order from the Wanganui committee who were purchasing them at the rate of half a crown each.
