BASIN RESERVE
£792 JTOJi- MINOR IMPROVEMENTS,
Tlio Mayor (c)iainiian), aiul Messrs. A. Marryatt, G. Frost, and C. G. Wilson wero present at a meeting of tho Citizens' Carnival Committee held in the Mayor's Room yesterday - afternoon, tho object being to formally approvo of tho paying over to tlio City Council tile monoys deposited with tho CJity 'rreaaurer by t'liei Citizens' Carnival Committee. Tho chairman explained the position, and pointed out that after tlio Bill for tlio promotion of the major scheme was thrown out- by Parliament, tho Reserves Committee brought the minor scliome before the council ior adoption, and it was carried by a- substantial majority at a meeting held on October 28 and confirmed on November 11. He personally was not in favour of tlio smaller scheme —lie was convinced that it would not bo in the nature of a permanent work at tlio Basin Reserve. As Wellington Soutli doveloped and traffic expanded, greater facilities for handling tho traffic would be required at that point, and this really only meant tlio easing of tlio corners. Mr. George Frost (chairman of tlio Reserves Committee) briefly reviewed the matter from tho committee's point of view. Mr. A. Marryatt moved that the money lying to the credit of tbe Citizens' Carnival Committee (£750, with £42 86. 4d. added as interest) 'be paid over to tli© Cit.y Council-.to be expended on improvement work at' - the Basin Reserve in the terms of Mr. Morton's report, as adopted by tlie City Council on October 8." The motion was seconded by Mr. Wilson, and carried. Before tlie meeting dispersed, His Worship congratulated the Carnival Committee on the good work that had been done through its efforts. Thojigh it was not intended' to give up the work of improving tlie City Dy these means, they wero bound to suspend operations in connection with any great progressiva scheme in the meantime, owing to other and more urgent oalls. He commented on the improvement that had already been effected in that part of the City between the top of .Upper Willis Street and Brooklyn,- When Central Park was thoroughly establiehed and developed it was .going to be such another beauty spot as tho Botanical Gardens —equal in beauty, but affording as well facilities for recreation and enjoyment in that locality. Wlion the Reserve's Committeo formally accepted the money he would be pleased to notify the City Engineer that the work could be gono on with as soon as possible.
