SHELL OUTPUT HELD UP STRIKE OF ENGINEERS. By Telegraph—Press Association—Oopyrlßhl Melbourne, December 16. At a meeting of the Federal Muni™ns Committee, Senator Pearce said! that the State manufacture of shells in Australia .had been completely held up by the strikes' of engineers at Waratah and Newcastle. The Council amended it to provide that if the difficulty is not settled, by December 30 the Governor is to appoint a member of tho Council to fill the office. In the Assembly the Government rejected tha Council's amendment to the Liquor Bill, providing for the closing of hotels a,t 9 o'clock, instead of 10, bv 35 votes to 28. During the'debate Mr. Holman announced that he was prepared' at any time to introduce ariti-shouting legislation. (Rec. December 16, 9.45 p.m.) Sydney, December 16. In the Legislative Council a motion not to insist on the Liqiuv Bill amend- . ment was negatived by 14 votes to 11. OTHER BILLS. Sydney, December 16. The Legislative Council read a third 1 time and gassed the Eight Hours Bill ' and the Commonwealth War Powers Bill. ■ SENTENCED TO DEATH. MURDERER, OF A WOMAN. ■ Melbourne, December 16. John M'Namara, found guilty of the murder of Mrs. Johuston, has been sentenced to death. [An elderly woman named Mrs. Johnston was fatally stabbed with a bayonet on November 21. Her brother, William Qitinlan, after a desperate struggle, disarmed the murderer, who escaped. Subsequently John M'Namara, Quinlan's son-in-law, who had been separated from his wife as the result of frequent quarrels, was arrested on a charge of murder. M'Namara called at the house where ■ his wife lived with; her uncle, Q.uinlan, Mrs. Johnston opened l thedoor, and! in reply to M'Namara's request to see his wife, said:"lf you have anything to say, say it to me. / If you make trouble we will send for ' the police." M'Namara thereupon stabbed tier, saying, "That is all I have to say." Quintan was not seriously injured.] SENSATION IN COURT. DEFENDANT SHOOTS PLAINTIFF AND KILLS HIMSELF. (Rec. A sensation- was created in the Children's Court, when Charles Lundle a Swede, when ordered to find sureties ■produced a revolver and fired a shot at Dorothy Davidson, who was seated at her solicitor's table. ■He then turned the weapon on himself, and subsequently Buccumbed.
