AN EDUCATION APPOINTMENT
... » MR. JOHN-OAUGHT/EY ASSISTANT DIRECTOR. Mr. John Caughley, MX, has been appointed by the Public Service Commis- ' sioner to be Assistant Director of Educatiori. The salary of the position is £650 per yearj and Mr. Caughley's first duty ■will be to draw up a Dominion 6cheme for the grading of teachers. Mr. Caughley, who is 46,yearB of age, has been- in the teaching profession for nearly 30 years, in which time he has held every class of position in almost every class of tichool m three education districts in the Dominion. v T5e fact that he was president of the Educational Institute' in 1913, vice-president in 1914, a member of the executive for many years, and that ho was elected to represent a branch of his profession on the Council of Education, is sufficient toin-'. dicate the esteem in which Mr. Oaughley is held by his brother teachers. ■ His more recent professional positions have been on the staff of the Wellington Training College, from 1906 until 1910, and headmaster of Christchurch West District High School from 1910 until the present date. Owing to the fact that Mr. Caughley took an active part in opposing th« Bible-in-Schools movement, it may be supposed that he is at least not interested in the religious instruction of the young. In actual fact he has been engaged in Sunday School work for 26 years, as teacher, superintendent of Sunday Sohools, lecturing to Sunday School teachers, 1 and conducting train-' , ing classes for them, examining classes, and editor of teachers' notes.
