MAGISTRATE'S COURT
POLICE RAID ! ALLEGED DISORDERLY HOUSE Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., had before , him in the Magistrate's Court yesterday , morning three men and three women, who : were arrested as the result of a police visit to premises in Haining Street on Monday night. Charles Smith was charged with keeping a brothel; Edward Keegan with assisting in the management 1 thereof; Walter Kempton with consorting with prostitutes; and Wilhclmina Bhnks, Leonora Parker, •, and Annie . M'Grath with assisting in the management of the brothel, and witli being'idle - and disorderly > persons. i The hearing of the charges against all • the accused but 'ICempton-and . Keegau ; were adjourned until Mondiy next.' Tho Magistrate severely warned Kemp- > ton (for whom Mr. P. W. Jackson ap- ! peared), Kut aa there was nothing previ- • ously against him, and as he was shown ' to be a hard-working man, the informa- • tion against him was dismissed, lii view, > of the decision, tho charge against Keegan was withdrawn. .. . VAGRANCY. An old woman named Annie Murdoch was sent to giiol for 12 months on a charge of being a rogue and a vagabond. John Chambers, alias Fraser, pleaded guilty to a charge of being a rogue and a vagabond, and was also sent to gaol for twelve months. Michael Costello, with several aliases, was sentenced to three months' imprisonment on a charge of being an idle and disorderly 'person. INSOBRIETY. Isidore Jacobus, who had been convicted of drunkenness on numerous previous occasions,, had another conviction added to -his record, and was fined £5, the alternative being two months' imprisonment. James Ferrier Connell, for drunkenness, was fined 10s., with the option of 48 hours' imprisonment. Daniel Leon, who had been found in a state of helpless drunkenness, was remanded for a week for curativc treatment. .Several first-offending inebriates were also dealt with. IMMIGRATION RESTRICTION. ACT. The Court was further, occupied with the hearing of the case in which. the Collector of Customs is proceeding against two Chinese residents for breach of the Immigration Restriction Act. The defendants were named as Chan. Yee Hop and . Won Chou Lin. Mr. P. S E. Macassey, of the Crown Law Offices, represented the Collector/of Customs, while Mr. E. G. Jellicoe appeared for the defendants. Evidence on the remaining charges was taken and 'was practically the same as that- tendered at the hearing of a previous charge,' and ■ after hearing addresses of counsel - the Magistrate reserved > decision. Mr. E. G. .Tellicoe appeared for the plaintiff, while Mr. A. 11. Hindmarsh appeared tor the .defendants.
