FOR THE ELEVENTH DRAFT
« WELLINGTON DISTRICT'S FALL NEARLY 300 SHORT CITY ALONE 94 IN ARREAR The mobilisation of the Eleventh Reinforcements was begun yesterday. Heavy shortages are reported in both islands. Wellington Military District (the best recruiting district in the country) is over 250 infantry short of what it was- asked to provide, and nearly 300 short iu all arms. No arm is yet complete. To begin with, Wellington Milifary District still required 26 men which it had beon asked to obtain to make good shortages in the Tenth Reinforcements. Then its quota for the Eleventh draft was 77S men, and it .was requested to send 110 extra to provide against expected South Island shortages. The infantry required of the district were:— For Tenth shortages 26 Eleventh quota 537 For southern shortages 110 073 The infantry actually sent to camp from the whole district yesterday only numbered 420, so the failure" amounts to 253. •'. - . Infantry for the draft cannot be accepted after December 23, but every infantry man obtainable is wanted. THE CITY'S POSITION. The heaviest failure for the district is in Wellington city, where the, shortage is ninety-four, sixty-nine of whom are infantry. Regarding a railway advertisement inviting applications from men between tho ages of eighteen' and thirty for junior porters and traffic labourers,-,aai Auckland official states that the Department, whilo affording every facility to its employees to go to tho war, was rather hard-pressed to fill tho posts vacated/ Preference is given to married men, and those eligible for enlistment are given very little hope of employment. Men rejected for military service and suitable for railway employment would bo taken. Tho advertisement contemplated the employment of youths not eligible for war service.
