( Hodgins, 1 pair socks. i t Entertainment for the Wounded Sol-' : diers' Fund. 1 The Wellington Central Mission was | responsible for an entertainment which j was given in the Concert Chamber of ] tlie Town Hall yesterday evening in aid of the Wounded Soldiers' Fund. The first part of tlie programme consisted I of a little children s play, "The Doll's Hospital," taken part in by about seventy children. 1 Tho scene of tho story was laid in a doll's hospital, and ! all tho dolls related tho incidents and adventures which resulted in''their becoming inmates of the hospital. Songs,, i choruses, .and dances, enlivened tlie play, and, in addition to the dolls, thero were fairies and other important personages intervening in the course of events. Tho second part of tho pro- I gramme introduced the play "Cinder- j ella," which appears to bo a great favourite just now- The part of Cinderella was taken by Miss Myrtle Bouttell, Prince Charming by Miss Petjierick; the wicked sisters; Miss M'Q'uade and Miss Carlson: the father, Mr. W. E.' Howe; and tlie fairy godmother, Miss Griff,en. ..In all, there were between thirty and' forty characters taking part. Mr. Steed-Roberts was the' organiser of the entertainment, arid tho pianist Privato Russell. The Rev. Mr. Knowles Smith was present during tho evening.
Letters From Soldiers. Mrs. Crawford, lion, secretary of tho Mayoress's Committeo of tho Countess of Liverpool Fund, lias received letters and post cards from some of tho soldiers at the front acknowledging gifts of socks, eoap, etc., from tlie committeo. Corporal A. S. Allen, Tarannki Company, Wellington Infantry Division, writing from Lemnos, says: "My very best thanks for the parcel I received yesterday (October 20), which contained two pairs socks and a picce of soap, which were most acceptable gifts, and greatly appreciated. 1 am oiie of tho Ot'li, so have not . yet had a chance of doing our "bit," but wo aro all ready. Appreciatively yours, ctc." From Private W. H. Moore, Wellington West Coast Company, who is also at Lemnos (on October 20), comes tho following acknowledgment of tho gift of sweets from a schoolboy of the Patutaki School (Master Raiigi Edwards): — "Dear Master Edwards, —Your very kind gift of lollies to hand, and boliove mo your thoughtful gift of sweets is very much appreciated by tho troops, moro especially as it means denying yourself of little luxuries. Out in this placo thero is plenty of excitement, and you may be sure that war is not liko what you see in the moving pictures. Again accept my best thanks, and hoping you aro in good health," etc. From the same miter comes another letter of acknowledgment written to the hpii. secretary of the committee at' tho Town Hall. In it Private Moore oxpresses his.best thanks for tho gift of socks, soap, etc. "The fact that troops knowing tlioy are .not forgotten by tho good ladies of New Zealand helps to cheer tho men and so make us better fighters. At present most of the boys from Maoriland are having a spell, but are in hopes of getting back to the firing line." Sergeant J. B. Foss, of "A" Company, Wellington Infantry Regiment,' writes from Lemnos also, and "as one of the New Zealand Forces to receive much-appreciated, and useful parcels of socks, sweets, etc.," expresses his thanks and says how pleased they all were to receive their parcels. From Lemnos (August 25), Privato F. Ehitten, of the Ruahino Company, writes:—"Wo have just received your two parcels of &ccks, sweets, and other articles, and I am sure tlie rest of the boys join in with mo in thanking you and tho other willing helpers for same. If you could only see how excited we are to get these opened'l am sure you would be pleased. Wo are all well, and hope to bo. in the firing line soon." Tho engagement is announced of Miss Sybil Rapley, second daughter of Mr. and Sirs. T. W. Rapley, of Wellington, to Lieutenant C. H. T. Skelley, of the Tenth Reinforcements. The marriage is to take place within a fortnight. An elocutionary recital is to be given by Miss Betty Purdom's juvenile pupils in tho Concert Chamber on Thursday evening in aid of the Mayor's Wounded Soldiers' Fund. A programme of exceptional interest and variety will be presented. Character sketches, comedy dialogues, duets, monologues, humorous and dramatic recitations, and a miniature version of tho evergreen "Cinderella" aro among the items to' bo givenby a number of talented little artists. Seats may now bo booked at the Bristol Piano' Company. Mrs. F. Couper (Toowomba, Queensland) is visiting New Zealand and is staying with relatives in Masterton. Later in the week she goes to visit her daughter, Mrs. M'Kenzie, in Hawke's Bay. Miss D. M'Clelland left yesterday on a visit to Palmerston North. (Continued on next page.J
