INDECENT LITERATURE FOUR BOOKSELLERS FINED In the Magistrate's Court yesterday morning, before Mr. D. G. A. Copper, S.AI., "a charge of selling an indecent document (the-"Green Room Magasiiue") was preferred against - William Frederick' Fielder, Patrick Joseph Flanagan, Augustus Vaughan, and Helen Wilson: For Hie prosecution, Inspector Henry appeared, and explained that another, shopkeeper had already been fined for selling tho same magazino. In the present case, it was believed that three of the defendants were not aware of the contents, but the fourth defendant (Flanagan) . ivas clearly aware of tho nature thereof. Mr: H.- F. Q'Loary tendered pleas of guilty on behalf-of all four defendants, and mentioned that" none of them had sold the paper after, the pfevious prosecution referred to by the inspector. The Magistrate fined Flanagan- £5,. with "costs 75., and everyone of the others £1, with costs 7s. MAINTENANCE. The warrant is to be Buspended- if the amount of arrears (£8) forthcoming by 12 o'clock on Thursday .next. Mr. I'. W. Jackson appeared for the complainant. Benjamin Ede was sentenced to three days' imprisonment for failure to comply with a maintenance order. The warrant, however, -will not he enforced if the defendant pays the amount'due on or before December' 20. OTHER CASES. A soldier, named William Ross, was fined -10s. for having committed an indecent act in Boulcott Street on Saturday. Default was fixed at seven days' imprisonment.' ■ Joseph Herbert l Charlton, for whom Mr. H. F. O'Leary appeared, was remanded to Thames on a charge of having failed to -account for the Bum of '£7 4s. ■ Gd., received by him on behalf of tho Provident Life Assurance Company, of Dunedin. , Joint Mackay pleaded guilty to a charge of using indecent language on the wharf at "Rona Bay, and was fined £2, with costs 13s. Default was fixed at seven days' imprisonment. Nineteen persons were convicted of drunkenness. One. of the number, Blanche Evelyn Coe, was committed to the Pakatoa Homo for Inebriates for a period of twelve months; Isidore Jacobus was fined £5, with, the alternative of a month's imprisonment; Timothy Donovan was fined £3, tho alternative -in his case being also, a, month's imprisonment; Richard I'ei-cirnl Waddy was fined £2, or seven days' imprisonment, the same penalty being imposed in the case against Thomas Withers; William Pearce and' Joseph Nidd (a prohibited person) were fined 20s. "each, with light alternaf/-'cs. Tho following were fined 10s., with tho option of <18 hours' imprisonment:—Sam Sinsjh, Frank Hughes, William Herbert Vincent. and John Dawson. Tho remainder of the inebriates tvero first offenders, and were dealt_ with as such. On a cliargo'of selling butter from her shop .oil : Sunday, November 21. Edith Grey was fined Is., and ordered to pay court costs 7s. .
