The Hon. A. L. Herdman left Wellington for Nelson lust night. He has accepted an invitation to attend the annual breaking-up ceremony at Nelson College.
The Hon. G. W. Russell left yesterday for Blenheim, where lie is to-open tho now Wairau Hospital Building. Sir. ltussell may possibly go 011 to Nelson before returning to Wellington.
Sir Joseph Ward was slightly indisposed yesterday, suffering from a somewhat severe cold, and 110 was not at his office during the day.-.
Among the passengers to arrive from England, via Australia, yesterday by tho Mooraki, were Sir Robert and Lady Walker, who at present aro the guests of His Excellency the Governor and tho Countess of Liverpool at Government House. Sir Robert Walker holds a captain's commission in the Coldstream. Guards, and has, it is understood, seen service with ihis regiment in Flanders. The visitor is the fourth baronet of a line created in 1868, and is twenty-flvo years of age. Two years ago he married Miss Synolda. Thyrsby-Pelhani, youngest daughter of Mr. James Thursby-Pelham. Mr. Day, assistant secretary and accountant to His Excellency the Governor, lias returned from a holiday visit to Rotorua. The Wellington Education Board has made the -following appointments:— Gladestouo, head teacher, Mr. SI. H. Dixon; llamua, head teacher, Mr. J. Harnett; Rangitumau, sole teacher,* Mrs. Bewley; Matarawa, sole teacher, Miss MacGregor; Rongokokako, assistant, Miss 0. Clifford; Greytown, assistant, Miss D. G. Armstrong; Mount Cook Infants', assistant, Bliss G. Hammond. Colonel Murray M'Oheyne Anderson has been appointed Quartermaster-Gen-eral to tlio Australian Imperial Forces in Egypt. Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Cooper, of Majoribanks Street, have reecived information that their son Leonard, who wont away with the New Zealand Forces, has been promoted to the rank of sergeant. A letter, written on' October 21, stated that.ho was then quito well. Lieutenant J. G. M'Callum, of the 3rd Reinforcements, writes from" Scotland, wliero he has been since leaving a hospital in London. He was leaving again for Gallipoli, as his wound liad quite healed and his health ,'was completely restored., Ho hadiliad no letters from New Zealand for four months, and was hoping to find some when lie returned to Egypt. The death of Sir. Francis Wilson Smith, of Wingfield Street, in his 79th year, removes another old identity. The late Mr. Smith and Mr. James Brown, of Upper Hutt, were tlie two last of 130 men who sailed from Wellington on May 24, 1852, in the cattle ship Tory for the Victorian goldfielils. They went through all {he trouble and trial of the early days in Victoria. Tho late Mr. Smith is the fourth of the company tliat has died daring tho last twelve months, and Mr. Brown is now the last survivor. Captain Cardale, chief mounted instructor, is at present in tho Greytown Hospital, suffering from a nervous breakdown. i Sir. William Alfred Butt, an old resident, and a Maori War veteran, died suddenly on Saturday night, aged '3 pears (says a Press Association telegram from Rotorua). Mr. W. H. George (of George and Kersley}, who is to report 011 Y.M.C.A. work' in' Egypt for the New Zealand Board, and Mrs. George, will leave Auckland for Sydney to-day by tho Niagara. From Sydney they will proceed overland to Melbourne, and there join the P. and 0. liner Maloja, which sails for England, via Suez,.on December 28. Mr. D. G., George, son of Mr. W. H. George, will leave for Sydney on Thursday by tho Mocraki, and will join the Malojn. at tlhnt port for Suez;
Major (Dr.) Oral's, who was superintendent of the Waihi Hospital, and has seen service in Gallipoli, returned to New Zealand by the Moere.ki yesterday. Lieutenant Foster, who was through tlie German S.W. African campaign, and Pte. Humphries, from Gallipoli, werp also passengers by tho same steamer.
