IMMIGRATION RESTRICTION 1 ACT. In the Magistrate's Court on Saturday morning Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, SM.j.gaVo his reserved judgment, in tiro ease in which the Collector of Customs proceeded against a Chinese resident, Van Chu Ling (wife of Chan Yee _ Hop), for a breach of the Immigration. Restriction Hop) for ar breach of the Immigration Act, in entering the Dominion without undergoing the language -test. The decision was that the defendant evaded the tc.it by reason of the fact that her husband had used the naturalisation papers, of another Chinaman, named Ah Young. A conviction was recorded, and a fine of £2 imposed. Other charges, arising out of tho same set of circumstances, will probably lie heard on Tuesday, when tho question of appeal will be mentioned. George A.'Mitchell, appearing in the King's uniform pleaded guilty to stealing a suit of clothes, valued at £4 10s., the property of William Kelly. The theft had been committed at a boardinghouse on November 25 -and the clothes had been sold to a second-hand-dealer. On the application of Inspector Hendrey, tho accused was remanded until l'riday next for sentence. OTHER CASES. Emily Johnston, for whom Mr. H. F. 0 Lcary appeared,_ was fined £3, with costs 135., for having used obscene language in Cuba Street on November G. Tho alternative was a mouth's imprisonment. For drunkenness, Isidore Jacobus was (inecl_ £5, with the option of a month's imprisonment, .while William Herbert \ incent, who was making his second apPP_ a r a nce 011 . a charge of insobriety, was fined 10s., in default to undergo fortyeight hours' imprisonment. A CIVIL ACTION. In the civil action, William Menton v. J5. J. J 1 ltzgibbon, a claim for £14 15s. judgment was given by Mr. W. G. Ridoell, S.M., for the defendant, with costs ,C 1 7s. Tho claim'was for moneys alleged to have been received by the defendant from the Public' Works Department on behalf of tho plaintiff, and not accounted for. By 'way of defence, receipts were produced for accounts paid oil behalf of plaintiff. Mr. J. O'Sliea appeared for defendant.
