FOR PATRIOTIC PURPOSES

EAISED AT WOOL SALE. As the result of tho wool sales yesterday a sum of .£BBS was gained for patriotic purposes in connection with the war. An announced in The Dominion yesterday, Mr. W. H. Booth, of CarrinL'ton Station, had donated tkreo bales of firstclass Southdown wool, and Mr. A. P. Whatman, of Abbotsford Station, had contributed two bales of fino fleecp wool, and .when the wool sales opened, yesterday morning these lots wero submitted for sale the agency of tho Wairarapa. Farmers' Co-operative .Association. Mr; Walter Hill, tho well-known wool expert, acted A" auctioneer, for thoso patriotic sales. The wool was put up in three lots. Lot 1 consisted of one bale donated by Mr. Booth. A total of £7b was realised for. it, and tlie sum is to be devoted' to a . trounded soldier in hospital. The total was .made up as follows:—Messrs. Elliott, •®> j F. Wall, £0; Batley, £5; G. Wheeler, and A. F. Eoberts, chairman of tho Wellington Wool Brokers' Association, .£3O. Mr. Eoberts put the lot up again, and it was finally knocked down to Mr. W. Nicholls for i 625. Lot 2 consisted of Wo bales given by tho samo donor, and .£540 was realised for them, Mr. Whatman buying them for .£SOO, and Mr.' Walter Hill for .£lO. Lot 3 comprisod the two bales given by Mr. W batman, and they were purchased by Mr. C. -S. M'Lean for pel - bale, making a total of ,£52, and a grand total for the three lots of .£067. Mr. Mabin (Levin and Co.) also sold for the Wounded Soldiers' Fund a bale of Eoniney wool, donated by Mr. J, 0, Bidwill, and three bales from Mr. C. 1. Bennett, of Masterton. These wero straightout sales at market prices per lb., the buyers taking the wool, and the amount received going to the fund. The four hales 6old at prices to iPaliso a total of about ,£IOO. In addition to the wool sales a tarpaulin was placed on tho floor, and buyers, _ growers, brokers, and others showered coins in this to the total of .£llß, and the money is to be devoted to the Mayor's Fund for Christmas entertainment of the troops in Wellington.
