THOSE BALANCE-SHEETS

AN IMPORTANT CORRECTION. ■ We have received the'following letter from the general secretary of the Wellington Branch of the New ZealandPatriotic Society, Mr. Joseph Lewis, whioli speaks for, itself: — Sir, —Through/inadvertence an announcement wa-s made that Dr. Platts-MiUs's Citizens' Committee had failed to furnish this society with a statement of its account®.

We regret that this announcement

was made, as a statement of receipts and payments, together with an auditor's report thereon, was presented and accepted by tho society on October 26, 1915, by the chairman of Dr. Platts-Mills's Committee.

I am, etc., (Sgd.) JOSEPH LEWIS.

Seon in regard to the above, J. F. Mills, chairman of Dr. Platts-Mills's Citizens' Committee, stated that the treasurer of the' Patriotic' Society informed him that his was the fourth committee to hand its papers to the society, and this notwithstanding the fact, that his committee continued its work for four weeks after the other committees had closed down, with the result that his committee handed in to the Patriotic Society a further £1270 for the funds. With regard to the statements that have appeared in the Press, .that the accounts of Dr. Platts-Mills's Committee had not yet been presented, Mr. Mills said that these statements were entirely erroneous; that he had personally interviewed the. officials of the Patriotic Society with regard to them, and they had promised to write immediately to the Press, correcting the misstatements, and stating that the accounts, together with the auditor's report, dated September 21, were handed in and accepted by the society on October 26.
