ARBITRATION COURT

ENGINEDRIVERS' DISPUTE. His Honour Mt. Justice • Stringer presided at the sittings of the Court of Arbitration yesterday, and, sitting with him as assessors, wore:—Mr. E. F. Duthie (employers'! representative) and Mr. J. A. M'Cullough (employees' ropresenative). The principal business before the Court was tho hearing of the dispute between the Wellington Stationary Traction and Locomotive Engined rivers' Union of Workers and the employers of labour in the industries concerned. Mr. A. Rosser, of Auckland, appeared for the union, while Mr. W. A. W. Grenfell appeared for the employers. The demands of the union were for a week of 40 hour 6, with wages at the rate of lis. 6d. per day as against the present week of 48 hours, with wages at the Tate of 10b. Gd. per day, and corresponding increases in the rates of pay for second-class drivers, firemen, and greasers. Increased overtime rates were also asked for.

The employors. suggested that the Court should renew; the'old award. They could see no reason for any increase in wages, as the present rate had always been treated as a true minimum rate and not as a standard wage. After hearing evidence and the addresses of the representatives on either side, the Court reserved decision. The union was directed to furnish the Court with a new list of tho parties cited, showing the occupation in every instaucfl, PARTIES ADDED. Captain Macindoe, secretary of the Merchant Service Guild, applied to have several parties added to the local award. Mr. W. Prj;or, representing the Invercargill Shipping Co. and the Southern Steamship Co., opposed tho application. His Honour said that it was not practicable to join parties in one industrial district to an award, which operated only in another industrial district. The proper course would be to have the award extended to the other districts.

The Court added five coastal companies trading to Wellington, but refused to add the two companies, on whose behalf Mr. Pryor appeared.
