Colonel Patterson, . Coast Defence Commander at Auckland, has keen appointed to take the place of Colonel Logan at Samoa for the' period of Colonel Lpgan's leave.
. Dr. W. Young, of, Wellington, who is serving with the Royal Army Medical Corps, is now-stationed at St. Patrick's Hospital in Malta, where his patients include- many Australian and New Zealand wounded from Gallipoli. Hi* only complaints are against tne hot weatfeer and the mosquitoes. • •
The many friends in New Zealand ofxMr. •6/ S. Titheradge will regret to hear tliafc Ms health, has not improved since he went to Melbourne from Sydney on a visit eight weeks ago. For the last four 'weeks he has D&en an imnato of St. ( Evin's Hospital. A recent examination hy X-rays showed an operation to be necessary, but not desirable under the circumstances.
Mr. E. -M. .Casey, who has been a member of the head office staff of the Labour Department for -the past ten years, has resigned his position and intends joiningthe next Reinforcements. Mr. W. M. Neylon, another member of the Department's staff, is with the 10th Reinforcements, and he and Mr.' Casey were recently the recipients of presentations from the officers of the Department. Mr. W. E. Shannon, rwovd clerk of the Department, has also enlisted, and will join the 11th Reinforcements. Captain Alex. Barr, well known in the Union Company's service as chief officer of the Maori, "and who at the outbreak of war was in Antwerp, where h6 remained during the bombardment, but later, got across to England, is making good headway since he offered ins services to the Admiralty.- For some time h'e was in command- of various auxiliary vessels. Writing to a nond in Lyttelton recently, he' mentioned that he had just returned to ralmouth from a five-day submarine i ~ ®. n was ordered to proceed a ■! °™2 day to take command of a flotilla of six vessels, which were to Bail for the Dardanelles. Apparently toe life at sea was not by any means n. pome, as Lieut.-Commander Barr mentioned that he had not had his clothes off for seven days, and he had heen given one hour to report himself tor his now duties.
♦i. w J ei "? ral meeting of members of the Wellington Master Plumbers' Association hold on Monday night, the opportunity was taken to present one of the members, Mr. Arthur Mack, of Jenkins and Mack, with a memento of the appreciation in' which ho is held by the members. It is Mr. Mack's intention to enlist, and he leaves by the San Francisoa boat on Thursday to proceed via America to England for the purpose of obtaining a commission J™ Royal Artillery. The president or the association, Mr William Judd lii presenting Mr. Maok with a case of pipes and a tobacco pouch, both suitably engraved, gave expression to the feelings of members at the step which air. Mr. L. W. D. Andrews, manager for New Zealand, and Mr. E. C. Rowe' local manager of the ITnited Insurance Company, leave for the north this morning. -
The death occurred at' Clareville on Saturday of Mr. Simon M'Lennan. Deceased, who had been ailing for some months, had reached the ago of 68 years.
Mr. D. N. Dodds, headmaster of tho Napier South School, retires on superannuation at the end of tho year.
Private Roy Frank Richards, whose death in action is recorded to-day, was a son of Mr. Frank Richards, formerly on the staff of the Government Printing Office, and now of Hobart, Tasmania, and of Mrs. Richards, now in Wellington. The deceased, who was only 21 years of age, was an employee of the Wellington Cabinetmaking Company, of Newtown, and left here as a private in the Sixth, Reinforcements. He is a nephew of Mr. Charles M'lntvre, secretary of the Now Zealand Natives' Association, and grandson of Mrs. M'lntyre, »f Pirie Street.
