MAGISTRATE'S COURT
ILL-TREATING A HORSE
Mr. D. G. A. Oooper, S.M., presided at yesterday s sittings of the Magis.trates'Court. Soni'e fifty cases 'were set down for hearing, but many of them were adjourned or withdrawn, and the list was quickly, disposed of. A young man, named Stephen Ivory, pleaded guilty to a charge of ill-treat-ing a horse, his driver- having recently been convicted of working the animal while it was not in ,a fit condition to perform its tasks. 'The Magistrate imposed' & fino of £3, .and' ordered the accused to pay solicitor's fees and court costs, totalling £1 10s. Mr. R. Kennedy, appeared for. the S.P.C. A. i REFUSED A DRINK. A painter, named' Alexander Waisanew, was convicted and discharged for drunkenness, while, for damaging a gla&-s panel at the Allmmbra Hotel after he had'been-refused drink,, the acoused was ordered to make good the damage by payment of £6 ss. and witnesses' expenses Ba.- The alternative was a month's imprisonment; but accused Was allowed 14 days in which to find the money.
PEOOLIAR CASE OF TRESPASS. . William : Grey Hall Baillie, was convicted of trespass under Section 6 of the Police Offences Act. Tho evidence was tliat on giving up possession of a house in Adams Terrace, the defendant moved into one next door, without authority. A sentence of ono month's imprisonment was imposed, the warrant to _ be suspended if the premises are quitted by December 9. Mr. G. Samuel appeared for the prosecution. VAGRANCY. James Rhodes, aged 75, pleaded not .gouty to a vagrancy charge. He had only _3s. ■ • lOd. in his pocket when arrested, and, according to Inspector il endrcv, had been locked up for his own safety. There were previous convictions for .vagrancy, and the Magistrate _ remanded the old man until this morning, pending inquiry as to whether be could be taken into th© Ohiro Home. •ii , ,' Wflraan . named Jean Dalziell, who. hW: been found on premises without ...lawful excuse, was convioted or vagranoy and ordered to come up for sentence when 1 called on.
EXPENSIVE MEDICINE. John Timbs,- who was detectod conveymtr lienor ; into Trentham Camp; pleaded that it was gin and peppermint for . medicinal purposes. Ho was fined 405.,.in default to undergo seven days imprisonment. MAINTENANCE. George Magnus Manson,- who did not appear, was ordered to contribute 30s per weelc towards the maintenance of his wifo and familv, a separation order beinc; wanted acainst him. 1 _ In the case of Lydia T.
